He was working for the Spanish special ambassador to Iraq, Miguel Benzo Perea.

MADRID, Feb. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- A Spanish Civil Guard police commander, Gonzalo Perez Garcia, who was shot in the head on Jan. 22 while serving in Iraq, died on Wednesday in a Spanish military hospital.

Spain's defense ministry said Perez Garcia died at 9:0O p.m. local time (0800 GMT) on Wednesday after suffering a "sudden deterioration," recorded in a medical report issued Wednesday morning by the Spain's Central Defense Hospital.

Doctors were unable to remove a bullet from Perez Garcia's brain and said his coma was irreversible.

Carlos Baró Ollero
