la Repubblica.it -- NASSIRIYA - Il caporalmaggiore Massimo Vitaliano, 26 anni, in servizio presso la task force Alfa di Nassiriya, è morto in incidente stradale in Iraq. Era in servizio al 19/mo reggimento guide di Salerno: era nato in provincia di Lecce a Galatole, e quella in Iraq era la sua settima missione all'estero: quattro volte in Kosovo, una in Afghanistan e una in Iraq.La notizia è stata data dal comando della missione Antica Babilonia, che ha subito escluso che il soldato sia stato ucciso durante un attacco.

The Defence Ministry said the attack took place on a road to the southwest of Nassiriya, the Iraqi city where Italy's contingent is based, and that a Romanian soldier was also killed .

It said the Italians, all members of Italy's Carabinieri military police, were travelling in a four-vehicle convoy when the bomb went off .

Two Italian soldiers and the Romanian were killed instantly while the third Italian officer died later in hospital from his wounds .

The fourth Italian, who remains in serious condition, has been transferred to a US military hospital .

The Italian victims were named as Captain Nicola Ciardiello, 34, who leaves a wife and baby; Franco Lattanzio, 38; and Carol De Trizio, 37.

Pietro Petrucci

Pietro Petrucci was the 19th fatality of the suicide bombing of the Italian Compound in Nasiriyah. He died from injuries on Saturday November 15, 2003, in a military hospital in Kuwait.



Petrucci's parents and two brothers had travelled to Kuwait from Italy where he was being treated and decided to turn the life support system off once it was found that the soldier was brain dead and would not recover from his injuries.
