Earl R. Scott III

General NewsJACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- Family and friends of fallen soldier Earl R. Scott, III, spoke to First Coast News Tuesday night, saying they will forever miss their loved one.



The Department of Defense confirmed two soldiers were killed when their "Kiowa" helicopter went down in Tikrit, Iraq, Nov. 8. One of those soldiers was Jacksonville-native Earl R. Scott, III.

Army Warrant Officer Earl R. Scott, III, 24, was born in Jacksonville and raised in Mandarin, and recently was stationed in Hawaii after training in Alabama. He attended Mandarin High School.

Left Vietnam as a Refugee, Returns as a U.S. Navy Captain

ABC -- Hung Ba Le's first ocean voyage was aboard an overcrowded fishing trawler when he was 5 and his family and hundreds of other terrified refugees fled Vietnam as Saigon fell to the North Vietnamese army.

Today he is Commander Le and at the helm of the warship USS Lassen as it makes a good will visit to the country he once fled.

"To think that 34 years ago… I left here as a little boy and to come back here now, it's incredible," said Le, the first ever Vietnamese-American Navy captain.

Paul McGee

Telegraph.co.uk -- Guardsman McGee, 28, died in hospital on Sunday. Police said a 28-year-old man was being held in connection with his death.

  

Guardsman McGee, who served with the Scots Guards in Iraq, was found injured in the town's McConnell Road in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The soldier, who had been working to recruit youngsters into the Scots Guard, was taken to Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley where he died a short time later.

Cruelty charges dropped against soldier

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - Charges have been dropped against one of four U.S. soldiers accused of mistreating others in their platoon in Iraq following an investigation into the suicide of an Ohio serviceman, the military said Friday.

Photo - Kieffer Wilhelm, a 19-year-old Army private from Willard, Ohio, who killed himself in Iraq in August 2009.

Spc. Daniel Weber of Frankenmuth, Mich., resigned from the Army and is expected to testify against two of his unit supervisors, said Maj. Myles Caggins, a spokesman for Multinational Division-South.

Camp In Iraq Named In Honor Of Local Soldier

General NewsKEYT 3 -- A local Commander with the U.S. Navy, who was killed in Iraq on Memorial Day is being honored in a special way.

The U.S. Military unveiled the new Camp Wolfe, named in honor of Commander Duane G. Wolfe.


Camp Wolf is located in what's now called , the Gulf Region District in Iraq. During the unveiling of the plaque Wolfe's wife, Cindi and their three children, watched online from California.

Operation Back to School Brings Soldiers, Iraqi Army, Children Together

NUBAI, Iraq – A combined effort between Soldiers, Airmen and the Iraqi army at Camp Taji, Iraq, brought much-needed school supplies to young Iraqi school children Oct. 7 at Al Abar Primary School – the first in a string of humanitarian efforts called Operation Back to School.

Operation Back to School is a volunteer mission that has been months in the making, spearheaded by Air Force Lt. Col. E. Kent Wong, director of operations, 821st Expeditionary Training Squadron, who said a joint effort between Army and Air Force made this day possible.

Maj. Rob Edwards, brigade public affairs officer and provost marshal with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 155th Heavy Brigade Combat Team and a Saltillo, Miss., native, said the mission began in early August.

Iraq prison guard shares experiences

The Brown and White -- Janelle Pham, a graduate student who went to Iraq as a member of the Military Police Corps, shared her experiences as a prison guard personally responsible for prisoners of war in Iraq on Sept. 30 at Packer House.

Pham said she always saw herself joining the reserves. She often played with G.I. Joes as a child, which only further motivated her desire to be in the reserves.

"It just seemed natural that I'd one day end up in the reserves. Our freedoms don't come for free, and I'm happy to serve for all of you," Pham said.

While an undergraduate at Moravian College, Pham was a member of the ROTC program at Lehigh.

Medic Lends Helping Hand to Iraqi Children

NUBAI, Iraq – A medic with the 36th Iraqi Army Brigade's military transition team, 1st Cavalry Division out of Fort Hood, Texas, gave medical treatment Oct. 7, not to wounded Warfighters, but to Iraqi children in Nubai, Iraq.

Staff Sgt. William Osorio, team medic with the 36th Brigade, 9th Iraqi Army military transition team, out of Fort Riley, Kan., said he learned of the mission through operations and civil affairs service members.

"We conducted (reconnaissance) of schools in the area to find a suitable school for needy kids," said Osorio. "Civil affairs really wanted to be in on this program, and we wanted to support them as well as the Iraqi Army."

Officer Lives American Dream

Times Record -- Having come to the United States as a child, patrol officer Vu Pham has made his American experience that of a dedicated public servant.

Now serving his fifth year with the Fort Smith Police Department, Pham is expanding himself beyond police work, serving in the Arkansas Army National Guard, for which he aspires to become an officer, and training vigorously for an upcoming marathon. Pham was born in 1978 in Bien Hoa, South Vietnam. When he was 4 years old, his father traveled to the United States.

“He came here early to escape the Communists, but he wanted us to be reunited,” Pham said.

Pham’s father eventually gathered the resources to bring his family to the U.S. In 1989, Pham, his mother and two little brothers arrived. Not long after, Pham had a third little brother.

Da Nang makes good impression on USS Mustin crew

On 20 October, the vice-chairman of the Danang People’s Committee Van Huu Chien met with the senior officers of USS Mustin destroyer led by Cdr. James T. Jones on their five-day visit to the city. Representatives of the High Command of Navy of Zone No. 3 also participated.

Vice-chairman Chien gave the delegation a warm welcome, saying he considered this a meaningful visit which will contribute to promoting the cooperation and friendship between the U.S. and Vietnam, including Danang and the two naval forces. He briefed on recent cooperation between Danang and the U.S. localities in commerce, investment, culture, health and education.
