A danish soldier died thursday evening in the Coalition camp in Al Haditha said the Army Operative Command. His parents and family have been notified. He is the sixth Danish soldier to die in Iraq.

The Danish Battalion were thursday evening contributing to an operation, when the camp was struck by missiles and mortars. Martin Hjort, 20, was gravely injured. {Ed note: Joergen Christian Nyholm (company commander) corrects this by saying Martin Hjorth was killed in action and not by indirect fire.] The soldier was evacuated by helicopter to the British field hospital where he died from his injuries.
According to the family Martin asked to go to Iraq, however, his views had changed after arriving in the country. He constantly wrote to his family, who reside in Sjaelland. He had considered asking for a previous deployment to Iraq. Once in country there was no convenient or harmless task. He felt , that he could do a many jobs, so readily vollunteered to do most things.
The fallen soldier was frequently contacted by his parents and one of his sisters. According to the family, Martin was an affectionate human being. They had been able to keep in contact via e-mails and SMS over the phone.

Body of Danish soldier killed in Iraq to be returned Friday COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) - The body of a Danish soldier killed in Iraq last week will be returned to Denmark on Friday, the Air Force said. Lance Cpl. Kim Wadim was killed Sept. 23 when a roadside bomb detonated near a three-car motorcade carrying nine members of a Danish Air Force unit assigned to protect diplomats from Denmark in southern Iraq. Eight other soldiers were injured. No diplomats were traveling with the motorcade heading for the Danish Camp Dannevang, near the southern city of Basra. Wadim's body will be flown to the Karup air base, 265 kilometers (164 miles) northwest of Copenhagen, where a military memorial service will be held, the Air Force said Tuesday. Wadim, 36, was part of a 10-man team responsible for the security of Danish Foreign Ministry officials. The unit is not part of the 463-member Danish Army contingent based at Camp Dannevang. Wadim became the third Danish soldier killed by roadside bombs in Iraq. A fourth Dane was killed by friendly fire in 2003, and another was killed in a car accident in southern Iraq.

Overkonstable Dennis Ove Hansens, 23, was killed in a vehicle accident on Tuesday June 6, 2006. The accident occurred at approximately 9.00 local time at Shaiba Logistic Base. The Danish contingent is stationed at Camp Danevang, which is near by. The soldiers were practicing tactical haulage and transportation movement by convoy when a Mercedes GD lost control. There were no other soldiers injured during the incident.

Dennis had worked with the Logistics Company as well as the Battalion staff. He is the fourth Danish soldier to lose his life while serving in Iraq. An investigation into the accident has begun, with a team from the Danish military traveling to the scene.
The Danish contingent held a service for their fallen comrade. As his casket was moved from the chapel at the base hospital his fellow soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder as the sun went down over the camp. After a few words from the camp chaplain they held a minutes silence. From there he was placed onto a military aircraft for the final journey home to his family.

The incident occured as the soldiers' Royal Guard unit was on patrol in Al Hartha, a conflict-ridden suburb of Basra.

A helicopter evacuated the two soldiers and transported them to the British field hospital at Shaiba Log Base, but one of the soldiers died on the operating table. The other soldier suffered surface wounds caused by shrapnel.
Major Gen. Poul Kiærskou, head of the Army Operative Command, offered his condolences to the family of the 20-year-old. The soldier, Jesper Nielsen, came from Jutland, but officials were withholding the location of his hometown in accordance with his family's wishes. |
