Randall L. Lamberson

Individuals USwww.news-leader.com -- A soldier from Springfield died Monday in Balad, Iraq, the U.S. Department of Defense said Tuesday.

Army Sgt. 1st Class Randall L. Lamberson was wounded Sunday in Ramadi when an explosive detonated near his vehicle, the military said.

Lamberson, 36, joined the Army in 1989 and arrived at Fort Campbell, Ky., in 2001. He is survived by his wife, Dana, daughter Kelsi and son Evan, of Fort Campbell; and his father, Lloyd, of Lampe.

"Randall believed in what he was doing," Dana Lamberson said in a statement released by the post Tuesday night.

Lamberson was a member of the Army's 1st Battalion, 506th Army Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team of the 101st Airborne Division stationed in Fort Campbell.

He was one of three sons of Joy Lamberson-Klock, founder of New Hope, a not-for-profit support group in Springfield for women with gynecological cancers. Lamberson-Klock died in 2003 after battling ovarian cancer.

The deaths of Lamberson and two other soldiers killed Monday bring to 141 the number of members of the 101st Airborne who have died in Iraq since the war began more than three years ago.

I'm Spc.Manor, and I arrived here in Iraq just over a month ago. As I got settled in and started to clean one of our work areas, I found one of those dedication bracelets with Randall Lamberson's name on it, where he was stationed, and when he died. So I looked up the name. That bracelet has been on my wrist since..and will not come off so I can be reminded of such a brave and wonderful man. I am inspired by his story and I am proud to wear his name, and it represents how all of us may have to pay the ultimate price of this war. What also intrigues me, is the fact that I found this bracelet on the anniversary of Randall's death....it's like it was sent from an angel above....
