www.macon.com -- JASPER, Ga. - The family of a north Georgia soldier who was killed Sunday in Iraq said he felt his mission there was important enough to re-enlist for a second tour, rather than rejoin his family at home.

Spc. David S. Collins of Jasper, Ga., was one of two members of the 101st Airborne Division who were fatally injured when a roadside bomb exploded near the vehicle they were traveling in during combat operations in the Al Anbar Province. Collins died following the attack on Sunday. Sgt. 1st Class Randall L. Lamberson, 36, of Springfield, Mo., died Monday from injuries sustained in the explosion.
"We are devastated by his loss, but extremely proud of his courage and bravery. He was a selfless young man who will be missed by many," Collins' father, Jack Collins, said in a statement issued by authorities at Fort McPherson in Atlanta.
The statement said Collins enlisted in the Army in 2002 after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C.
"This was David's second tour in Iraq," his father said. "Though it is natural to look forward to rejoining your loved ones at home, David felt that his service in the Army was critically important -- so important that he re-enlisted during his first tour there."
Collins was assigned to the Army's 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. |
