CBS 5 – Green Bay -- (AP) GREEN BAY A second Marine who graduated from Luxemburg-Casco High School has been killed in Iraq, a De Pere man who describes himself as the victim's best friend said Sunday.
Troy Metzler said Claire Dombrowski had informed him of the death of her son, Luke Zimmerman, 24, of the town of Green Bay.

Jesse Thiry of Casco, another Luxemburg-Casco graduate, was killed in Iraq in 2004 when he was 23.
Metzler, 24, said Zimmerman had called him just last week from Iraq. He says Zimmerman primarily discussed Metzler's recent wedding, and said little about Iraq.
The two of them had been members of the wrestling and track teams at Luxemburg-Casco, Metzler said.
The U.S. Defense Department did not immediately release any information about Zimmerman.
The Green Bay Press-Gazette reported that a man came to the door of Dombrowskis's home Saturday and gave a brief statement in which he said Zimmerman's "service was exemplary and that will speak for itself."
Thiry's father, Randy, said his late son had been a "very close" friend of Zimmerman. He said his family had also been called by Zimmerman's family and told of the death.
"It brings everything right back," he said, of memories of when his son perished.
Zimmerman, a 2000 Luxemburg-Casco graduate as was Thiry, had worked for Metzler's father and mother, Steve and Julie Metzler, who own Julie's Cafe in Green Bay.
"He was always smiling ... the life of the party. He was always upbeat. He was a hard worker and he was a dedicated worker ... and he was a man of his word," Steve Metzler said.
The senior Metzler said serving in the Marine Corps was something Zimmerman had worked for since he was in his teens.
"Since eighth grade, he was talking about joining. This is something he always wanted to do," he said. "It's something he had in his heart, and he was going to do it. He believed in it, and when they sent him to Iraq, he did not waiver. He wanted to go fight for his country."
This was Zimmerman's first tour in Iraq, and he had been there for few months, Steve Metzler said.
61 Wisconsin soldiers and Marines have died in Iraq since hostilities began in 2003. Another six military personnel from the state have died in Afghanistan. |
