Tallahassee Democrat -- Another young Big Bend resident has died in combat. It is an indescribably sad reminder that a war so distant to us here in the relative safety of home is only as far away as thoughts of the men and women who are serving in our name.

Julian M. Woodall, 21. Son. Husband. Graduate of Tallahassee's SAIL High School.

And United States Marine.

Wherever one stands on the conduct of U.S. foreign policy in Iraq and Afghanistan, the men and women in uniform do not shape it. All volunteers, they put their lives on the line in America's name, even when Americans are torn about the wisdom of their mission.

Cpl. Woodall, the 10th person with Big Bend ties to die in Iraq or Afghanistan, was described by his former principal, Rosanne Wood, as "a really great kid."

But one of the most poignant descriptions was posted on Tallahassee.com by a reader who apparently knew the young man:

"I met Julian in a very difficult time in my life. He gave me hope and showed me there was something to live for. He was a sweet young man with a bright smile and a kind heart. Always willing to help out. I wasn't surprised when he gave himself to the Marines and to our country. He was always a hero. Always will be a hero. I am proud to have known him. He left a mark in my life I will never forget."

As fellow citizens, we, too, must never forget.

Julian,
I would like to say thank you to you and the other Marine from your unit(3/10) who was also KIA that day for your service and sacrifice for our Country. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.
