 Wichita Eagle -- Kansas National Guard Spc. John Edward Wood, a member of Detachment 1, Headquarters Support Company, 891st Engineer Battalion, Garnett, has been killed in action in Iraq, Maj. Gen. Tod Bunting, the state's adjutant general announced this afternoon.
Wood was attached to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 110th Engineer Battalion, Missouri National Guard, Kansas City, Mo. The 37 year old Humboldt, Kansas native was a member of the 891st Engineer Battallion. He enlisted in the Kansas Army National Guard in October of 1988, and is survived by his wife and four children.
Wood, a resident of Humboldt, died Saturday as a result of an improvised explosive device (IED) which struck the convoy in which he was traveling.
For his deployed service, Wood was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart and Combat Action Badge.
He had 18 years military service.
