Arizona Republic -- An Army Reserve soldier from Surprise has been killed by an improvised explosive device in Iraq, the U.S. Defense Department announced Friday.
Sgt. James Witkowski, 32, died Wednesday of injuries suffered there earlier that day when the bomb detonated near his Humvee during convoy operations. He was assigned to the Army Reserve's 729th Transportation Co., based in Fresno, Calif.
A woman who answered the phone at Witkowski's home in Surprise said the family preferred not to comment at this time.
A neighbor, Tony Mullozzi, said Witkowski apparently lived at the Surprise home with his father and mother.
Mullozzi said he had never met the son, but described the parents as wonderful neighbors. The mother had expressed worries about her son being in Iraq, he said.
Witkowski became the 60th soldier, Marine or sailor with ties to Arizona who have died in the Iraq war, according to an unofficial count. Five more Arizona service personnel have died in Afghanistan.
Thousands of Arizona service members have been involved directly or indirectly in the war, but the total is impossible to calculate.
Currently, nearly 1,600 Arizona Guard and Reserve members from the state are among the more than 146,500 called to full-time duty nationally. |
