The Leaf Chronicle -- Spc. Daniel W. Winegeart died doing what he loved, which was performing missions with the 5th Special Forces Group.
Winegeart, 23, of Kountze, Texas, was killed Tuesday in Baghdad, Iraq, when his military truck drove off an overpass. Winegeart was assigned to the 5th Group Support Battalion at Fort Campbell. The wreck is still under investigation.
As a special electronic devices repairer with 5th Group, Winegeart was a young soldier hand-picked for the job because of his exceptional leadership ability, said his father David Winegeart.
"I never had been in the Army, and I wasn't aware of all the things the Army does. He was the one who was always the leader, and he always took care of family," said Mr. Winegeart, also of Kountze. "He wanted to get into special forces, and he loved it. His group is his closest family like his own family. He wanted to serve his country, and he wanted to keep our freedom here at home."
Mr. Winegeart said funeral services will be held in Kountze, and he is nearly overwhelmed by the amount of support from near and far.
"He'd done things for people that I'd never even heard of, and it makes me just so proud," he said choking back tears. "We'd done everything together; hunting, fishing, and he loved football. It was his biggest sport. He was not only my son but my best friend. I'll really miss him. I know he's with the Lord now."
Spc. Winegeart joined the Army in November 2002 and deployed with his 5th Group unit to Iraq in August. It was his third tour in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to special forces officials.
Other survivors include his mother Terri Winegeart of Beaumont, Texas, sister Casey Winegeart of Clarksville, and grandparents Phillip and Eva Mae Winegeart of Sour Lake, Texas, and Lester and Melba Turner of Silsbee, Texas.
His awards and decorations include the Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary and Service medals, Army Service Ribbon and Parachutist Badge.
Spc. Winegeart is the 174th Fort Campbell soldier who has died while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom since March 2003. |
