Southern Standard -- KNOXVILLE (AP) — An Army soldier from Knoxville was killed in Baghdad, Iraq, on Monday when his vehicle accidentally rolled over into a ditch, the Department of Defense reported Tuesday.
Spc. Luke C. Williams, 35, served with the 3rd Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade of the 3rd Infantry Division, based in Fort Stewart, Ga.
Williams' wife recently returned from her own deployment to Iraq, and the couple has two children, the Knoxville News Sentinel reported.
"She called late Monday night and said the military had been over to her house," said Ted Mills, manager of West Knoxville supermarket where Williams worked before enlisting.
After working for Kroger for seven years, Williams enlisted in order better himself and try to provide a better life for his family, Mills said.
"My store is grieving. It hit us pretty hard," Mills said on Tuesday night. "He was part of our Kroger family." Store employees recently sent Williams a care package with snacks and magazines on University of Tennessee football.
Williams is the third East Tennessee soldier to die in Iraq in recent weeks. Two members of the Tennessee National Guard 278th Regimental Combat Team died Aug. 22 when a roadside bomb exploded near their vehicle.
