 Rome News-Tribune -- A soldier, who was born in Floyd County and lived in the area until he was a teenager, was killed in combat in Iraq over the weekend, the Department of Defense and his widow said Monday.
Sgt. William E. Allmon, 25, of Ardmore, Okla., died Saturday in Baghdad of wounds received when his vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device (IED).
He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 64th Armor Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, and 3rd Infantry Division, of Fort Stewart.
The Department of Defense announced the death Monday of All¬mon, who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Jennifer Allmon, who would have celebrated her fifth wedding anniversary with her husband this June, said he was a “proud soldier, loving husband and devoted father.”
The soldier served as a combat engineer in the Army and specialized in building protective structures for friendly forces and destroying protective structures for enemy forces.
This was his second deployment to Iraq — his first between January 2005 and January 2006.
Kevin Larson, a spokesman with Fort Stewart, said since Allmon joined the military in 2000 he has received a number of recognitions, which include two Army commendation medals, an Army achievement medal and a combat action badge.
Allmon arrived at Fort Stewart in May 2003 and was deployed for a second time in May 2007. He was to return this summer from a 15-month tour in Iraq.
Allmon is survived by his widow, 3-year-old son Damien, 11-year-old stepson Jason Luke Johnson, all of Chattooga County; father, William Allmon of Cartersville; mother, Donna Fortune of Guyton; grandfather, Leonard Allmon of Lindale; and grandparents, Billy and Joann Phillips of Cedartown. |
