Quad-Cities Online -- The Department of Defense announced Monday that Naval Petty Officer 1st Class Jennifer A. Valdivia of Cambridge has died of a non-combat injury while supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Petty Officer 1st Class Valdivia was found deceased on Jan. 16 in Bahrain. She was assigned to the naval security force for Naval Support Activity, Bahrain

Her death was within the designated hostile fire zone, and is under investigation.

The Gulf Daily News in Bahrain reported that her death was a suicide, and that a memorial service is planned on Wednesday in Bahrain

The newspaper said her body was discovered after the Criminal Investigation Directorate (CID) received a report that she was missing, according to CID director general Brigadier Farouk Al Ma'awda.

The story quoted a spokeswoman for the Fifth Fleet, who said Petty Officer Valdivia was last seen Jan. 11 and that she was due to report for duty Jan. 14.

I just wanted to say that I was quite upset to hear of Jen's death a year ago. Her and I were roommates for a few years while we served in the Navy. I am so sorry that we lost contact and that I was not able to be there for the family. You will be in my prayers.
