Perry County News -- DUBAI - A local sailor serving in the Middle East died this week from injuries she sustained in a car accident in Dubai.

Shayna A. Schnell, 19, died Monday morning, her grandmother, Linda Terry, said. Her father and stepmother, Doug and Peggy Schnell of Gatchel, are returning this week from Dubai.

Their daughter’s body will return within the next week or 10 days. Funeral arrangements are pending, but Terry said she expected visitation will be at a local funeral home.

Schnell’s sister and two brothers, Nichole, Trent and Tyler Schnell, also traveled to Dubai after the accident. Tyler is also serving in the Navy.

Schnell was visiting Dubai when the Sept. 24 accident occurred. She was in a taxi en route to a doctor’s office when a tire on the taxi failed, sending the vehicle into a brick wall. The wall then collapsed on the vehicle.

Schnell spent her childhood years in Dubois County but moved to Perry County when she entered junior-high school. She graduated from Perry Central High School in 2006 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. She finished her basic training at Great Lakes, Ill.

She was later stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, and became a master of arms before being deployed to Bahrain, a chief Mideast ally to the U.S.
