Shreveport Times -- A Minnesota soldier stationed at Fort Polk has died in combat in Iraq, the Pentagon announced today.

Sgt. Jason Alan Schumann, 23, of Hawley, Minn., died Saturday near Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle.

Schumann was a Cavalry Scout assigned to Apache Troop, 3rd Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Infantry Division. Schumann joined the Army in September 2001 and arrived at Fort Polk in Octpber 2004, a release from the post says.

Schumann's awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster, the Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf clusters, two Army Good Conduct Medals, the National Defense Service Medal, the Iraqi Campaign Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Humanitarian Service Medal.

Schumann is survived by his wife Laura, son Joe, and parents James and Lucinda Schumann.

A memorial service for Schumann will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the main post chapel at Fort Polk.
