Enrique Henry Sanchez

Individuals USWilmington Star -- Garner | A Marine from North Carolina who died this week in Iraq had wanted to join the Marines since he was about 11 years old, his grandmother said.

Pfc. Enrique Henry Sanchez, 21, died Thursday in Iraq when his Humvee ran over an explosive device near Ramadi, family members said Friday. He was on his second deployment to Iraq.

His family discussed his death, which the military had not yet announced.

Sanchez, who wanted to enlist after graduating from Garner Senior High School, had to lose weight before he could join the Marines. So he ran with an 80-pound backpack and dieted, eventually losing 152 pounds.

He left in 2005 for Fallujah, serving a seven-month tour. His grandmother, Pat Ayscue, said he was dark and brooding for the first few months after he returned. He tried to confide in high school friends, but they had a difficult time relating.

"The most traumatic stuff we'd (ever) been through was petty high school stuff," said friend James Johnson, 21. "He was telling the stories of a war-weathered man, stuff we civilians could not come close to imagining."

He eventually returned to Iraq, patrolling the streets in and around Ramadi, in central Iraq.

Sanchez was especially close to his grandmother, who had raised him since he was 4 days old. His mother and father, who were in the Navy, divorced.

Funeral arrangements haven't been made, said his mother, Christie Otten, who plans to fly soon to North Carolina from Winchester, Calif.

These are stories American need to hear! Enrique had a calling in life to become a "MARINE"! We always here stories on our athele's. All he or she had to do: to become a professional and or win the gold. Well, Enique losting 152 lbs to become a "MARINE". Is an amazing story! Truely, making standards his goal to overcome a weight issue. That ceratinly, most young men wouldn't have attempted to lost the weight. Enrique is an AMERICAN HERO! However, he is much more to all those that knew him. I only wished I had and our son gregory. Both serving two differnt branches of service. yet, Gregory always considered the other branches his brothers and sister as with those serving with him in the ARMY. In war the branches mean nothing. Soldiers protect one another. Mission to win the war, the war on terror and we all come home no one left behind! Enrigue thank you for serving our country and your brotherhood to our son. healing is a slow process. reflect on the mant memorable times you each shared together with enrique. You realize he is very much in your heart. He is resting now with Gregory and all our fallen soldiers. Don't be sad Enrique wouldn't want that. He loved you very very much. He knew his family loved him. God Bless! father of fallen soldier US ARMY Sgt. Gregory L. Wahl KIA Balad, Iraq 05-03-04 " Dragon Soldier"

Enrique,
I would like to say thank you to you and the other Marines who were also killed in that blast for your service and sacrifice for our Country. And to your family, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

This story is so common. It was ours almost 2 years ago. If I can be of any help, please contact me @ mccarthychristopher01@msn.com I wish you all the strength to deal with this and hope your son comforts you through the next few months. When the tears start to flow and you are questioning why??? Remember him and be proud!.....Rhonda
