Gregory S. Rogers

Individuals USwww.wcpo.com -- The ongoing U.S. military presence in Iraq has claimed the life of another Tri-state military member.

Sergeant First Class Gregory S. Rogers, 42, of Cincinnati, was killed Sunday.

The military reports he died when an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicles during convoy operations.

Rogers' wife died from a medical condition a few months before he was deployed to Iraq in December 2005.

He planned to retire when he returned from his tour of duty in December 2006.

Rogers is survived by a daughter in Coraopolis, Pennsylvania and a daughter in Ravenna, Ohio.

His parents, Luther and Donna, live in West Chester.

Rogers joined the Army in April 1984 and was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

Rogers is the 22nd military member to die serving in the latest invasion of Iraq.

Just last week, news came that Bryan Taylor, a Clermont County Marine, was killed in Iraq. He was reportedly shot while refueling a humvee.

As of 5 p.m. Monday, 2,350 Americans had been killed serving in Iraq since March 19, 2003, the start of the war.

I was SFC Rogers medic his first trip to Iraq. He was a great man who led his soldiers from the front, yet had compassion and understanding. He will be greatly missed by all of us that had the honor of serving with him. "No Slack" 2-327 Inf 101 Div Airborne (AASLT)

When a soldier is lost
And tears seep from his mother’s eyes
Nothing can bring him back
Nothing can soften her cries
As they tell her he’s gone
No words ring louder or more true
Than we’re sorry for your loss
And we’re here to help you through
They fight for our country
While we lay asleep
They sleep with eyes open
Watching terrorists creep
They wake up every morning
Always ready to do what’s right
While we take forgranted
Peaceful sleeping at night
And all that they ask
Is that they get some respect
For someone to care
That they stick out their necks
They risk dying daily
To let us be free
I have a true hero
And he died for me
His name is Gregory Rogers
He was killed in Iraq
And even knowing the risks
Three times he went back
He didn’t care about terrorists
He didnt care about wealth
He is an American Soldier
He fought with bravery and stealth
He’s fought in the wars
He’s seen death first hand
He’s an American hero
He is a real man
But he is also a father
Two girls call him dad
And they are left remembering
The hero they had
For our hero is gone
But not beaten for he won
He joined God that day
And God took his gun
He said don’t you worry my child
For you’ve won the fight
I too am fighting in this battle on your side
So sleep peacefully tonight

I was SFC Rogers's Platoon Leader in the first deployment, and I listened to his words. I knew he was a great man from the moment I spoke with him. I was angered when I heard the news and still am. We lost a great man, soldier, father, and husband. I still think about those moments that I had with him and his wife when I was back at Ft. Campbell, KY. Those were good days. I will keep him in my memory and I am sorry for not writing sooner, I just couldn't believe it, ... I still can't.
