San Diego Union Tribune -- SAN DIEGO – A 22-year-old Army sergeant from San Diego has been killed by enemy fire in Iraq, authorities said.

Sgt. Richard A. Vaughn died Monday in Baghdad when enemy forces attacked using a rocket-propelled grenade, improvised explosive device and small arms fire, the Defense Department reported.

Vaughn was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, based in Fort Hood, Texas.

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement regarding the death of Sgt. Vaughn:

"Maria and I join the people of California in offering our sincerest condolences to the family, friends and fellow soldiers of Sergeant Richard Vaughn, a devoted patriot who gave his life to defend freedom.

"Richard's courage and unyielding loyalty remind all Californians of the sacrifices made to protect democracy and keep us safe. We will honor and cherish the memory of this brave Californian forever."

In honor of Sgt. Vaughn, Capitol flags are being flown at half-staff.

Ricky and my husbandwere in the same company for 2years before, my husband ETS was up. He was always really kind and a sweet guy. He was really sweet to our daughter too, I remember the time we gave him a ride to his barrack and he was sitting in the back seat with our daughter who was 2 at the time, she kept flirting and talking to him. He wasn't annoyed at all he talked to her and was very friendly and kind. He was a good guy and when my husband found out about his death yesterday he was really upset because he had known him and knew what kind of guy he was. He was a good man and my heart goes out to his family.
