Jorge Luis Pena-Romero

Individuals USSign On San Diego -- FALLBROOK – Army Staff Sgt. Jorge Luis Pena-Romero was known for staying cool and lifting the moods of people around him.

Pena-Romero, 29, of Fallbrook, died Saturday after an improvised explosive device detonated near his vehicle in Iraq, said Maj. John Clearwater, a public affairs officer at Fort Irwin, where Pena-Romero was stationed as part of its 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment.

"You couldn't ask for a better non-commissioned officer," said Sgt. Jason Morris, a friend of Pena-Romero at the base. "As an individual, this guy was incredible – easy to talk to, always had some kind of smile on his face, always knew how to lighten people's moods."

Pena-Romero was a machine gunner who had been in the Army since 1995.

"He was well-liked, and he was a mentor to many of the guys in the troop," said Lindsey Keys, whose husband is the commander of Pena-Romero's unit.

Pena-Romero is survived by his wife, Melissa, and three children. A memorial service is planned Friday at Fort Irwin.

"Jorge

You will always be in my heart and I have been very fortunate to have you in my life. I have your cousin Bibi to thank for that. We will see you tomorrow when your mom brings you home. My tears will be of sadness but will turn to those of joy, for you will be in the House of our Lord. I will remember you as a friend and know you are a great father, husband, brother, son and have enriched all lives that have had the pleasure to meet you.

As an American I would like to thank you for all you have done throughout the years to protect these United States. To your friends that still are in harms way, a special thanks from this American.

I saw this poem and thought it made sense

Love you bro, Eric

WHILE WE ARE SLEEPING
While we are sleeping
in the comfort of our beds
Another soldier fallen
Another soldier dead.
God bless us all,
the whole human race
and all the difficulties
we must now face.
While we are sleeping
in the comfort of our beds
Another soldier fallen
Another soldier dead.
How can we ever Thank You
what words are there to say
To leave the ones you loved behind
broken and crying
and absolutely knowing
this freedom came from dying.
Before I lay my head to sleep
in the comfort of my bed
I pray to God
in the heavens above,
Take special care
of these families that loved.
Be there for them
in their bottomless pit
as they will continue to weep.
The price they have had to pay
is also so very steep.
To look upon their face no more
is more than enough to bare.
The sadness that will never cease
The loss that once made them complete.
Be grateful enough
to show that you care
for their loss is truly your gain.
While we are sleeping
in the comfort of our beds
Another soldier fallen
Another soldier dead.
This sacrifice
intertwined with this gain
carries the depth of the deepest pain.
These families have
so gratefully shared
in a death for which freedom came.
I pray for the soldier far from home
and pray that you know
you are never alone
God Speed and God Bless
once again you will be
protected and sheltered
in the land of the free.
Please stop this war,
Please ask no more
for their ultimate gift of dying.
So as you are sleeping
in the comfort of your bed
Remember another soldier fallen
Another soldier dead
to give you all your comforts
of laying in your beds.
To wake up each and every day
forever to be able to say
GOD BLESS THE USA.

Jorge was my Brother-n-Law, He was a very nice and caring man. He loved to be with his family and loved when we had bbq at our house. He and my dad would talk for hours and hours about all kinds of stuff. I remember when him and the family would come over to the house, we would just laugh about all kinds of things & if you brought up something imbarrising he would just turn bright red, it was so funny to see him do that..I loved him so much he was my loser and i was his punk, thats what we would call eachother, thats how we showed one another that we cared. You will always be in my heart and in my mind.
Your Loving Sister-n-Law,
Vanessa-aka- your punk!!

SGT PENA as I knew him back in 1999 through 2000, I spent 7 months sharing the same room in a theatre located on top of a mountain in Kosovo. Many of my first Army memories are ones with Jorge's bright smile and great sense of humor. My deepest symopothies go out to his surviving family.
