Individuals Czech RepublicBelow is the story of the Czech Republic's first fatality during the War in Iraq. The dates below are correct, it has taken over four years to find the name of a fallen hero. When a soldier falls on the field of battle, they earn the right to live forever. We leave no one behind.

Associated Press -- PRAGUE, Czech Republic A Czech soldier died on Thursday from injuries he had suffered in a car accident in Iraq at the beginning of the month.

Major General Rostislav Mazurek, deputy chief of staff of the Czech Armed Forces, told journalists that Pavel Maurer died in Prague's Military Hospital from injuries suffered on May 9, 2003, in a car accident some 150 kilometers, or 94 miles, south of Baghdad.

Colonel Miroslav Bartos, the director of the hospital said Maurer, a sergeant-major, was admitted into the hospital on May 12. He attributed the cause of death to the "failure of vital bodily organs."

Pavel Maurer, 25, of Brno, 200 kilometers, or 125 miles southeast of Prague, was member of the Czech military contingent stationed in Kuwait. His death was the first reported fatality in the unit.

Pavel Maurer suffered serious head injuries when his car overturned on a return trip from Baghdad to his base in Kuwait. Two other Czech soldiers suffered light injuries.

Major General Mazurek said the cause of the accident was still under investigation.

Pavel,
I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for the Czech Republic. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. The United States is lucky to have an ally such as your Country in our time of need.

A grateful American

I am deeply sadden of the lost of Pavel. He is a Hero to all of the Czech Republic. An yes, he was so much more to all those that knew and loved him. Pavel was a man on a mission in life. That very few in the Czech Republic do for it's country. He has touched and helped mant Iraqi's. To one day live in peace like the Czech's do today. Our Gregory and all our fallen soldiers are with Pavel never to be alone. Nor will he ever be forgotten, not today and all the tomorrow's. Unfortunately, the heart ache's will take time tp heal. So take it one day at a time. Known that our family and all the fallen families from America. Appreciate the service of Pavel by our soldiers side. He is a Hero in our hearts. US Army Sgt. Gregory L.
