Marcques J. Nettles

Individuals USwww.oregonlive.com -- Military officials have located the body of an Oregon sailor missing in Iraq.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Marcques J. Nettles, 22, of Beaverton was killed when a seven-ton truck he was riding in rolled during a flash flood near Al Asad, Iraq, according to the Department of Defense.

The April 2 crash, which was not a result of enemy action, also killed several other servicemen.

Nettles was originally listed as missing in action. His body was recovered Sunday, the Navy said.

The Beaverton man graduated from Westview High School in 2002, where he was co-captain of the football team.

Nettles, 22, graduated in 2002 from Westview High School, where he played varsity football for three years and was co-captain his senior year.

Principal Matt Coleman told The Oregonian newspaper Thursday that Nettles was well-liked at Westview.

“During his time at Westview, he had an incredible impact on the school and school community,’’ Coleman said. “We hope for a safe return.’’

Nettles enlisted in the Navy in January 2003 and was assigned to Force Service Regiment 1 Fleet Marine Forces Pacific.

Marcques,
I would like to say thank you to you and the other men who were in that truck with you for your service and sacrifice for our Country. And to your family, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

My heart goes out to your family. My husband was killed in January of this year. I almost believe being MIA is worse than KIA. I am so sorry for your loss and I hope God will help you and your family through this. Know that there is a wife, mother, father and family that is feeling what you are too. You are not alone!

I taught Marcus in high school. That was when he taught me. I learned how classy and earnest and compassionate a young black male in the Pac NW could be.

Marcus was unique; he wasn't angry. He had a movie-star smile and loved life. He was wonderful with Christina.

I cried when I heard. Rest in peace.
