News-Democrat & Leader -- A graduate of Logan County High School has become Logan County's first fatality in the long-running war in Iraq.

Army PFC Joshua M. Moore, 20, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007 at 8:08 a.m. when the HumVee he was driving in southern Baghdad ran over a pressure switch IED. The explosive device was a 55-gallon drum of homemade explosives.

According to Logan County Coroner Mary Givens, a close friend of the family, the truck flipped, throwing all four occupants out of the vehicle. Two of the passengers were also killed and the other was badly burned, Givens said.

The body of PFC Moore is being brought back to Baltimore, Md. for autopsy and DNA tests. Then his remains will be flown to Nashville and transported to Price Funeral Home in Lewisburg.

Givens said she doesn't expect the funeral to be held until the middle of next week. Some people expect the crowd too be so large that it will need to be held at Lewisburg School or Logan County High School.

Moore was very aware that his life was in danger. Givens said he had left plans for his funeral services while he was here in the past few weeks.

Josh Moore was a basketball player at Lewisburg Middle School, a Babe Ruth baseball all-star, and a high school baseball player. He gave up sports after his sophomore year to go to work. "He could have played varsity his junior and senior years, but he decided it was more important for him to start working at the Lewisburg Minit Mart," said his high school coach, Ethan Meguiar.

PFC Joshua Moore, C Company, 1-18 Infantry, 1st Platoon, 2nd Battalion, 1st ID, FOB Falcon was in his second deployment to Iraq after enlisting in the United States Army when he graduated from LCHS in 2005.

He is the son of Jeff and Carolyn Moore of Lewisburg. He had been home for a visit around Mother's Day.

Logan County Judge/Executive Logan Chick has issued an Executive Order decreeing that all flags located on county government property in Logan County be lowered to half mast until dusk on the day of Private First Class Joshua M. Moore's funeral.

"I respectfully request that all flags located on city government property located in Logan County be lowered as well," Chick said.

Joshua,
I would like to say thank you to you and the other two soldiers who were also killed in that blast for your service and sacrifice for our Country. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the friends and family of Josh. Logan County is very proud of his patriotism. I did not know Josh personally, but have heard what a great young man he was. His service to our country is greatly appreciated.

Growing up with Josh was an honor and I will cherish every memory I have with him. From sports to work to just hanging out with friends I will always remember Josh as someone who was only a phone call away. I pray that God keeps his hand on Josh's family. I love you Josh! I will see you again!

As I stood along the street today for Josh's funeral procession I noticed several things that really touched my heart. One was a woman who had been pushed to the curb by her caregiver. She was elderly, frail and in a wheelchair yet she clutched her American Flag with a strong hand to her heart to honor your son. She will remember the sacrifice of your loved one.
Further down the road was another sight I will not forget. Many were lined along the streets of our hometown, Lewisburg. On Smith Hill was an elderly gentelman rising from his wheelchair after paying his respects as Josh's procession drove by. He will not forget.
I was so moved by those whom we call neighbors, friend, and comrades. We are all connected and do grieve for your loss. My children knew your son from school and church.
Please know we will never forget your son, his life, his honor and his love of country, God and fellow man.
