Arizona Republic -- A 21-year-old soldier from Holbrook died Sunday in Iraq from what the U.S. Defense Department characterized Thursday as a "non-combat-related cause."
Spc. Damien Michael Patrick Montoya had been in Baghdad since December.
Additional details about his death were not immediately available. But family members described Montoya as a dedicated son, brother and infantryman who liked to say that the military was in his blood.
His grandfathers served in World War II and Korea, and his father was in the Navy.
Victoria Turley said her son began visiting military recruitment offices at the age of 10. She has fond memories of him as a teen roaming around the backyard in a set of fatigues given to him by a cousin in the Marines.
"He'd go out at night so the neighbors wouldn't see him," Turley said. "He was playing army, snaking around in the dark.
"He'd dive around on the ground and roll over."
Montoya's dream was realized in 2004, when he left for boot camp four days after graduating from Holbrook High School.
Turley last saw her son during a two-week leave in May. She began to choke up as she recalled what he told her about his work in Iraq.
"He said that if people knew they were really helping, maybe (the public) would feel better about the war," she said.
The family said it has not been officially notified as to the cause of his death.
Montoya was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 67th Armor Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division at Fort Hood, Texas.
Funeral services for Montoya will be held early next week. |
