Wichita Eagle -- Willsun Mock's two older brothers were married with children at the time of the 9/11 attacks. The Harper native decided he'd be the family's representative in the war on terrorism.

"He just felt it was his time," said his mother, Ann Mock. "Of course he wanted to save the world. He was my peacemaker. He liked people. He loved people. And people remembered him after they met him."

The U.S. Army announced Wednesday that Sgt. Mock, 23, died Sunday of injuries sustained when a bomb detonated near his vehicle in Baghdad.

The second-youngest of seven children, Mock enlisted in the Army more than four years ago and was serving his second tour in Iraq when he was killed. Mock was assigned to the 1st Infantry Division in Schweinfurt, Germany.

Ann Mock said her son was a caring young man.

"I wish he had never had to live through this," she said. "He loved his fellow man so much that it was very hard for him to see another world.

"He might have been very tough, very well-seasoned and very good at his job, but he wanted to help those people out. He wanted to help his fellow soldiers out.

"I was very proud of him."

To the Parents of Willsun Mock:

Thank you for raising such a good son. I saw a news item about him on TV last week. Part of it had been recorded at least a year or so earlier. I could not hear the complete segment due to the TV being in a noisy area. However, I could tell the sincerity in the young man's face and knew that he was talking about his job in Iraq. I thought to myself about what a fine American he was, what a great soldier he most certainly was. I thought about how I would like to meet such a fine person.

I did meet such fellows when I was in Iraq. A company of Marines were in our hangar for two nights after ariving in country. I talked with some of them and was very impressed with their demeanor and respect to a stranger. I have often wondered about those soldiers.

At the end of the TV segment I could tell the worst was coming. Without hearing all of the narrative I knew what was going to be said. The commentator was telling of the death of your son.

For the last days since seeing the news program I have thought about Willsun Mock. I wrote his name down in my Palm Pilot so I would remember to go online and find out more about him.

Tom Brokaw wrote a book titled "The Greatest Generation", primarily about WWII era citizens and soldiers. Many people feel today's generation of young men don't measure up to those of the 40's. To some extent I agree, but I do know of young men who do measure up. Those include the Marines I talked to in the hangar in Kuwait, and your son, Willsun Mock.

I express my smypathy to you for your loss. I am going to leave your son's name in my Palm Pilot with a brief note about him. As a soldier who has been in three wars, I am pleased I can say I know there was a young man from Kansas who is every bit as great and as dedicated as those from the greatest generation.

Sincerely,

Ray Mansfield (USAFR Retired)
