Columbus Dispatch -- Only two months ago, Army Capt. Matthew Mattingly had gotten engaged. Mattingly, who was making a career of the Army, had already served in Bosnia and Iraq, and he was about to be sent back to Iraq a second time.

But the wedding will never take place.

Mattingly, who grew up in Reynoldsburg, died Wednesday during combat in Mosul, Iraq, when gunfire hit the OH-58 Kiowa reconnaissance helicopter he was in, the Department of Defense said yesterday. The 30-year-old paratrooper had commanded Troop A of the 1 st squadron, 17 th Cavalry Regiment of the 82 nd Airborne Division.

Family members were in mourning last evening, including his father, Dennis Mattingly, who now lives in Beavercreek, Ohio.

He remembered a son who graduated from Reynoldsburg High School and then Xavier University, a son who loved flying "ever since he was young."

It was unclear last night whether Matthew, a pilot, was at the controls of the helicopter.

Matthew was athletic, his father said, and enjoyed softball and football as he was growing up. At Reynoldsburg High, he was on the football team, said former Principal Dan Hoffman.

"He was a top-flight kid, the kind of kid you would want defending your country," Hoffman said last night. "A solid kid from a solid family."

Upon graduation from Xavier in 1998, Mattingly received a commission and went into the Army.

"He was turning into career Army," his father said.

He completed the Aviation Officer Basic Course in 1999 and in 2002 served in Bosnia as part of the NATO stabilization force with the 25 th Infantry Division. In 2003, he was sent to Iraq with the 4 th Infantry Division. Mattingly was assigned to the 82 nd Airborne in 2004.

This July, he had been back to Beavercreek, the community east of Dayton where he now lived, and had just gotten engaged to a captain in the Air Force, Mr. Mattingly said.

Already in his career, Mattingly had earned the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart and many other service medals, according to the 82 nd Airborne.

In a written statement, Col. Kelly Thomas, the 82 nd Airborne Combat Aviation Brigade commander, praised Mattingly.

"He was a professional warrior, a combat veteran and a caring troop commander," Thomas said. "He served his squadron and nation doing what he did best, leading and caring for his troopers."

Capt. Mattingly’s body is being flown to Germany, his father said, en route to Ohio. Memorial service plans are pending, according to the 82 nd Airborne.

Besides his father, Mattingly is survived by his mother, Randi Mattingly of the East Side, and his younger sister, Michelle Mattingly of Canal Winchester.

To the Mattingly family from the Wahl family. Now is the the time to be very supportive toward one another. To reflect on the very fond and memorable times you each shared together with Matthew. You will realize he is very much with you: in your hearts! Healing is a very slow process. Take each day one at a time. Matthew has not died in vain. He ia an AMERICAN HERO!. Obviously, those attending to honor him. He was much more. I thank your son for his service to our country and his brotherhood to our son, as Gregory felt of Matthew. Soldiers in war have a special BOND> To always protect one another. Gregory and Matt are with all our fallen never alone. Father of fallen soldier US Army Sgt. Gregory L. Wahl KIA Balad, Iraq 05-03-04.

I'd served with CPT Matthew Mattingly while at Ft. Hood, TX and 1-25 AVN in Hawaii where he was my Platoon Leader, my mentor and most of all, my friend. I was he first "Platoon Daddy" like he used to call me. We did learn a lot from each other and even though I'm dealing with this great lost, I'm also celebrating his life and treasuring all the great moments we'd shared. I'll will always keep the "REDS" hat you once gave me near my heart and I do promise that you will never be forgotten. Renegade 26, "SCOUTS OUT" my friend.

I went to Xavier University with Matt. We were Ranger Challenge Buddies. Matt always had a smile on his face and was always having a good time. He loved life and he loved the Army. I have no doubt that Matt was a superior officer as he was a superior cadet. I will miss him very much and to his family you have my deepest sympathies. Matt was a great guy and he will be missed all over!!! Xavier Rangers!!!

My heart goes out to you and your family. I too have a heavy heart for I knew Matt while I was stationed in the 82d. The most accurate statement I can make about Matt is that he was truly a great American. Matt was an exceptional leader and a fine person.

For anyone one who is reading this I am Matt's sister Michelle. It is overwhelming, to know how much Matt was loved by the army. And to know the love from Ohio was the same. I wanted to thank his troop and Officer Guinn for bringing my brother home. My brother loved flying and his family even when we weren't there. The one thing that saddens me is that Matt never got to have a family, he would be a great dad.But knowing the 1-17 CAV
was his family gives me peace. Thank you so much!!!!
