www.kentucky.com -- FORT CAMPBELL, Ky. - A Fort Campbell soldier from Texas was killed in Iraq when a roadside bomb exploded near his Humvee, the Army said Wednesday.

Staff Sgt. Johnnie V. Mason, 32, of Rio Vista, Texas, died Monday from injuries suffered in the explosion, the Army said. The 101st Airborne Division soldier was an explosive ordnance disposal supervisor.
Mason, who was responsible for disarming roadside bombs, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution in a July story that the bombs were becoming more potent.
"The insurgents who make them are getting smarter, so we have to get smarter, too," he told the paper.
Mason was assigned to the 717th Ordnance Company, 184th Ordnance Battalion, 52nd Ordnance Group (Explosive Ordnance Detachment). He entered the Army in October 1992 and arrived at Fort Campbell in September 2001.
Mason is survived by his wife, Brook; a daughter, Ashley Bradley; and a son, Adam Bradley, all of Clarksville, Tenn.
He also is survived by his father, Rodger, of Rio Vista, Texas, and his mother, Sabine, whose address was not known.
A memorial service for the soldiers will be held in Iraq, and Fort Campbell has a monthly remembrance ceremony for fallen soldiers.
The Army said 30 troops from Fort Campbell have been killed since the 101st Airborne returned to Iraq for a second yearlong tour starting in September. More than 90 soldiers based at Fort Campbell have died in Iraq since the war began in March 2003. |
