Robert Nathan Martens

Individuals USArizona Republic -- A Valley Navy serviceman, who is the son-in-law of Buckeye Police Chief Dan Saban, died Tuesday in Iraq.

Hospitalman Robert "Nathan" Martens, 20, of Queen Creek, died after he was injured in a Humvee rollover crash in Al Qaim, Iraq, according to the Department of Defense.

More than 50 soldiers with ties to Arizona have been killed in Iraq, and more than 1,800 U.S. soldiers have died since the start of the conflict.

Martens was a Navy Corpsman assigned to serve in the Iraq War with the 2nd Marine Division near Baghdad. He enlisted in March 2004, according to the Navy.

He attended Hospital Corpsman school in Great Lakes, Ill., before he trained at the Field Medical Service School in Camp Lejeune, N.C., and was then assigned the 2nd Marine Division in December 2004.

He is survived by his wife, Erin, and their 10-month-old daughter, Riley Jo, and several other family members in the Valley.

Saban, Marten's father-in-law, ran unsuccessfully for the office of Maricopa County Sheriff against Joe Arpaio in 2004. A retired Mesa Police Commander, Saban was hired as the Buckeye Police Chief earlier this year.

He released a statement Wednesday thanking friends for their prayers and concerns for the family.

"Please continue to pray for Erin, Riley Jo, Nathan's family, and ours," Saban wrote.

Saban and his family founded Kops and Kowboys for Kids, an annual rodeo event to raise money for children's charities.

As a teen, Martens was involved in Pinal County 4-H.

Dru Alberti, a leader of the Queen Creek 4-H group, knew Martens from her work with teens in the Pinal County club.

"I remember watching him grow into a fine young man," she said.

Funeral services for Martens are pending.

The National Organization of Medics and Corpmen wish to express our deepest thoughts and prayers for a fellow Doc and his family.

MEDIC, CORPSMAN, DOC

I have served in every battle
Our Country has fought
I was there on the air, land, sea
Serving our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines
Not asking for glory
Preserving the fighting strength

I went when asked to go
In war and in times of peace
I was there to give aid to all
Whether friend or foe
Heart filled with joy helping to give birth;
To the agony of trying to save a friend

I have laughed and cried
Even wet my pants in fear
Running to the calls for help
Patching wounds and giving encouraging words
My hope for others who will follow
In future battles will come to know

You'll always be loved by others
'Cause you were their
Medic, Corpsman, and Doc

I had the privilege of meeting Nathan through my sons. They played football together for the Queen Creek High School Bulldogs. My sons looked up to him and have fond memories of him training both of them to take his place as center on the team after he graduated. They thought he had the "coolest" old truck in town! In listening to the conversations of the young men who new him kind, tough, smart, great ball player and good friend were some of the words used to describe this young man. I know a class mate of his that was considered "slow" by his peers and had few friends but Nathan always made him feel like an equal and never judged him as others had. When this young man learned of Nathen's passing he locked himself in his bedroom and didn't come out for nearly 24 hours. He then told me that Nathan was always kind to him, treated him as an equal, and that he would always remember him. It says alot about the character of a popular young man that will take the time to notice the kid with very few friends. I can still see the Bulldogs taking the field in purple and gold, facing the United States Flag with hands over their hearts during the National Anthem before each game. Nathan played hard under that flag in High School and later gave his life for it. Thank you Nathan for your noble sacrifice! Our thoughts and prayers are with your family.
Warmest Regards,
