Howard March Jr

Individuals USWIVB -- (Buffalo, NY, September 26, 2006) - - Another Buffalo native has died in Iraq. Marine Lance Corporal Howard March, Junior was killed Sunday while battling enemy forces in the Al-Aanbar province. News 4's George Richert spoke to his family Tuesday afternoon.

Lisa Leeper said, "He was a very, very good boy, loving, protective, just a good boy."

Lisa Leeper of North Buffalo has lost her only son. Twenty year old Lance Corporal Howard March, Jr. was killed on Sunday while serving in the Anbar province of Iraq, where the second Battalion 8th Marine Regiment routinely did roadside vehicle inspections.

Leeper said, "He was a wonderful decisive young man who knew what he wanted to do with his life and he did it."

Lance Corporal Howard March also left an impression on the recruiters who helped him get into the only branch of the military that works by air, land and sea.

U.S. Marine Corps Gy. Sgt. Keith Shepherd said, "He was a motivated young man and he always came in here with a smile on his face. In fact, I remember it like he was sitting here."

He and his best friend joined the Marines right after they graduated from Hutch Tech two years ago.

The body of Lance Corporal Howard March, Jr. will arrive Wednesday afternoon at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware and then be flown to Western New York this weekend.

Funeral plans have not been finalized.

We learned of LCpl March's death last night. We learned about how his patrol buddy tried to keep him from dying but could not prevent his death. LCpl March's death is the first in the company, which deployed to Iraq two months ago to the day. Two months ago to the day, LCpl March was one of the brave Marines lined up by platoon waiting to board the buses from Camp Lejeune to go to the air base and from there to Iraq. We send our most heartfelt prayers and condolences to LCpl March's family. And though we did not know LCpl March personally, we feel that we have lost a member of our family as well.

Each time my newspaper publishes the names and photos "Faces Of The Fallen". I always make it my duty to look at the photo carefully, and read the small caption. Last week, there are four pages of photos. How can one respond to such loss. Mere mortals, they were, flesh and blood on this earth, now in the arms of angels.

This is my second posting on this page. I wonder what future Howard March Jr. has missed. What he could have accomplished. Was he happy with his life.

Was he frightened when he was injured just before death.

How many other souls extended their hand when his departed his body to guide him home, and proclaim with incredible excitement "Here he comes, Here he comes, welcome home".

Today, on Veteran's Day Weekend, out pastor placed the pictures of several
Americans who had lost their life in Iraq. Marine Howard March, Jr. was one
of them. As I looked into his young, eager face my heart went out to his
parents. I sat there in a house of worship with my 4 children safe and I was
so humbled. I want Howard March Sr. and Howard Jr.'s Mother to know that
their son means something to me and my family. His selfless act to be one
that answered "I Will Go." has been one of many who has made it possible
for the rest of us to choose where we worship, choose our own destiny. I say
"Thank You" as there are no words that can truly begin to repay the gratitute
men and women like Howard, desrve. No matter the conflict, no matter what
is one's opinion about any conflict in any time. Howard said "This is What I
believe" and he was willing to do it for me and you. I pray that God conforts
the Marchs at this time and to find some kind of peace in knowing one day
you'll be able to put your arm around him again. In a place were no man or
woman need take up arms... where peace is forever and Man inbraces his
fellow Man and God smiles upon us all and says once again... "It is good."

"Greater love hath no man than this,
that a man lay down his life for his friends."
John 15:13

What a great man Howard was. I cry each time I think of him. Howard and my son were best friends and he is deeply missed. He has moved on to a better place and did his country proud during his time here. God Bless your family.

This is formally LCpl Brandon Callahan/USMC. I was friends with Howard in high school, we were line brothers and he joined on the same day as my cousin. Its been years since his passing. Since then ive been to and from iraq and its still hard to believe that he is gone. Howard and I were stationed on the same base and even after his death I thought I saw him at a few of his favor clubs and other various places that I had seen him. Just wanted to let it be known that even though it was so long ago some of us are still emotional about it. I would like to get in touch with his mother to make sure she is taken care of. And even though the last post on this site was long ago I would hope that it is still viewed and not forgotten about. If anyone has information on how to get in touch with Howard's mother please contact me at Faybu@hotmail.com. Thank you.
