www.wcsh6.com -- PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- Army Specialist Joseph Alan Lucas, who grew up in Bath, was killed Thursday in Balad.
Lucas, who was 23, was assigned to an armor unit with the Third Infantry Division. He had been living with his wife and their 15-month-old son in Georgia, where the division is based.

Lucas was one of seven siblings, all boys, and was in his second tour in Iraq. His father, Jeffrey Lucas of Wiscasset, said his son attended Morse High School but moved to Georgia nine years ago with his mother.
The elder Lucas described his son as easy going, with a great sense of humor and very smart. He said Joseph joined the Army after he got out of high school and was on his second tour in Iraq. He planned to leave the service when he returned stateside and was thinking of getting into a computer-related field.
The announcement of Lucas' death was made by Senator Olympia Snowe, who said her thoughts and prayers are with the family. She said the nation can never sufficiently express its gratitude for his sacrifice, and his courage will forever be remembered. |
