Seattle Times -- Two soldiers, including a 29-year-old who most recently lived in Lacey, Thurston County, died Saturday after an explosive detonated near their Humvee in Riyadh, Iraq.

Sgt. Velton Locklear III, 29, and Pfc. Kenneth E Kincaid IV, 25, of Lilburn, Ga., were in the 2nd Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 25th Infantry Division, Schofield Barracks, Hawaii.

Locklear lived in Thurston County with his wife, Denise, and their two sons, before being shipped out this summer for his second tour in Iraq, said his sister-in-law Debbie Littlejohn.

Denise Locklear and sons Velton IV, 7, and Nathan, 5, moved to Honolulu this summer when Locklear was transferred from Fort Lewis, Littlejohn said.

"He was really nice, really compassionate. He had a great personality," Littlejohn said Tuesday in a phone interview from Honolulu. "You always felt comfortable around him."

Locklear, who originally was from Texas, joined the military, following in his father's footsteps.

"He obviously had that example, but it was something he wanted to do," Littlejohn said. "He loved being in the military."

A funeral date has not been set. Services will be in Texas.

"He loved being a father, he loved playing football and he loved being a husband," Littlejohn said. "He was a great guy."

Velton, my man, I can't believe this. i remember the times we ( Liz, David, and me, Ray) sat at your apartment in Denton and sang like fools. that one verse you loved, ".....and I said OOOHHHHHH....." that was all you.
great times and great memories.
i tried to look you up when i went home to el paso but no one knew where you went.
you will always be my singing partner and i'll forever dedicate that song to you.
thanks for being a friend Velton.

Velton,
I would like to say thank you to you and the other soldier who was killed in that blast for your service and sacrifice for our Country. And to your family, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy.

My brother, my best friend, my hero, I cant believe its been one month since Velton left us. I am broken hearted and I still think of him every minute of each day. Velton had a beautiful personality and heart of gold. He was the most humble and noble man of all. He was a wonderful father and husband, brother and son. All of the fun things we did and all the long talks I will keep very close to my heart always. I know that he is in God's kingdom as an angel looking down on us now and protecting us. Rest now, brother, we will be with you soon! I love you man.
Love, Your little sister,

Velton,

You are a awesome person. I remember all the laughs we had together. I know you are in Heaven now and you are safe with God. I will pray for you and your family. Farewell my dear friend, I will see you one day again.

Love your friend,
