Times Dispatch -- With pacifist parents and no family members in the military, Karl Linn was an unlikely Marine.

But the events of 9/11 changed him.

"I think he wanted payback, as well as some discipline," Richard Linn said of his oldest son. "I'm the Peace Corps type, but I didn't object."

So after he graduated from James River High School in 2002, Karl Linn earned the blessings of his family and joined the Marines. Lance Cpl. Linn and his unit -- the 2nd Platoon, Company C, 4th Engineering Battalion out of Lynchburg -- shipped out to Iraq in the fall.

Now, the unthinkable has happened.

Linn and three others from his unit were killed Wednesday in Iraq's Anbar province during an ambush on their convoy. Linn, 20, was from Midlothian. The other victims were identified as Sgt. Jesse Strong, 24, of Orleans, Vt., a student at Liberty University in Lynchburg; Cpl. Jonathan Bowling, 23, of Stuart; and Cpl. Christopher Weaver, 24, of Fredericksburg.

Linn's interest in engineering was evident from an early age. In 1998, he and five classmates from St. Michael's Episcopal School in Bon Air designed a winning entry in the Junior Solar Sprint -- a miniature solar-powered car. Later, Linn founded James River's robotics team.

"He was not so much of a tinkerer as an observer," Richard Linn said. "He was a very quiet person, very smart, very off-the-wall. They used to call him 'Crazy Karl' in high school because they never knew what he would do next."

After James River, Linn joined the Marine Corps Reserve but chose a delayed-entry program so he could start college. He enrolled in the mechanical-engineering program at Virginia Commonwealth University and participated in "weekend warrior" basic training while attending classes, specializing in combat engineering. Then, last year, Linn's unit was activated. They were sent into combat in November.

Between missions, Linn was keeping himself busy e-mailing his family, playing with his Canon PowerShot A60 digital camera and updating his new Web site, www.karl.linn.net. He posted photos of himself, grinning widely, posing with his machine gun and Humvee.

"Other than being tired recently because of 12-hour days patrolling, he'd say the food was lousy and it was chilly," Richard Linn said yesterday. "He was more concerned about when we were sending him more socks and gummy bears, which were apparently in short supply."

Even though he was able to call home only once, at Christmas, his family could see his adventures online. They knew he was safe.

On Wednesday morning, Richard Linn was 40 miles north of Richmond on a business trip when he got a call from his mother. The Marines wanted to talk to him at home.

"You're never prepared. My wife just didn't even want to think about it. She was always scared, from the time he was in boot camp, but she hoped and prayed and tried not to dwell on it. I knew this could happen. I felt the odds were good that it wouldn't, but I've never been a gambling man"

Linn is survived by his father and mother, Malisa, and brother, Tan, who is 15 and a sophomore at James River.

I just read about Mr. Linn in the Culpeper star exponent and I just want to say thank God for men like him that will defend this great nation. It is a shame he was killed but he died for a cause worth fighting for and he will be remembered as a true patriot forever. I can't imagine how hard it is for his parents, I have a son and I don't even want to think about his death coming before mine. I know one thing though if we don't fight against the radical muslims they will try to kill everyone in America and that's a fact. I will visit Karl's grave and say a prayer for his family soon.

The Linn family should consider filing suit either against the U.S. or Iraq in order to achieve status in the court system thereby giving them the power to subpoena the email and other electronic data they desire as a legacy from their son.

Hi Karl,
You don’t know me, but I read about you in the Washington Post newspaper today. The article was about your parent’s trying to gain the rights to your web page. I haven’t looked at it yet, because I was spelling your last name as lynn sorry:) It is a coincidence I saw your name at all on this web sight. I didn’t expect to see something else dedicated to you. I hope your family is able to read these postings as well. This list of brave people, who have sacrificed their lives, is way to long. I hope the world looks at these personal stories, and realize that war affects all of us. Personal stories put such a human touch on what happening. Right now this very minute a soldier is fighting, putting themselves in harms way, to protect each one of us in the U.S. Like you I am 20 years old. I couldn’t imagine giving up my cozy comfortable life, for the unknown. It must have taken a lot of bravery to leave your normal life and join the military. Especially because I’m sure you knew you would probably go to Iraq. You must have had a deep dedication to serve your country. My father spent the summer at Camp Victory, a base in Baghdad. He works at the Defense Intelligence Agency in DC. I was so worried the whole time, but he made it home safely. My boyfriend’s brother is on his second “tour” working in Mosule SP? (no tour if you ask me.) He has 2 small children at home. Well, I don’t know if you were religious, but the war has made me pray every night since it started. In a way it almost renewed my faith. Well I am about to graduate from Northern Virginia Community College with a degree in radiological technology. I tell you this because next semester I plan on attending VCU, if I recall that’s where you went. You must have been very smart if you were an engineer. I’m not good at math. Well you’re in heaven now, where we all will be. …. It’s just a matter of time. I’m sure you are being rewarded for you bravery. Please tell my friends and family up there hello, and I wish I could have met you. Someday we will meet, I promise.

my name is cpl gentry, my deepest apologies on your lost. i was with karl and tried my best for him. i am so sorry of this tragedy. when linn came in country he was very quiet, he opened up as time went on. karl was a great marine and he was very smart. he was very versatille of our missions and very outgoing. when i do sleep and wake up, i wished it was a bad dream. i miss those who died very much and i will honor them the best way i can.

hey karl,
i actually attend james river high school and i have a lot of friends at VCU so when i heard the news from both schools, i was shocked. my physics teacher is actually the sponsor for the robotics team you found, im sure you knew him too. your mural is still up in mr. negaard's room. i also thought it was pretty amazing on how you built a solar-powered car and other things. i see your brother, tan, every morning. he always stands in front of the library talking to his friends. this morning, it reassured me to see him smiling, just letting you know he's doing good. God Bless Karl, God does amazing things, and what you did was one of them. =)

I was reading Karl's website when I decided to google his name; the
search came up with this website, my thoughts went completely
blank: I was devistated. For the first time
in 16 years, I saw a fleeting glimpse of the reality of war, and the
vast
complexity of one person's life. I don't mean to sound knowing in
any way; If anything I am in shock: I am truly devistated.

My thoughts go out to Mr. and Mrs Linn
