www.sacbee.com -- Issac Shawn Lawson, a military police officer, was killed Monday in Baghdad when a Humvee he was riding in was struck by a roadside bomb, the Department of Defense said.
Sgt. 1st Class Lawson, 35, a Elk Grove native is survived by his wife, Suzette, 44, and three children in Sacramento.

Lawson arrived in Iraq for a yearlong tour in September, and his unit was assigned to train the Iraqi Police Force, according to Lt. Toni Gray, spokeswoman for the California National Guard.
Lawson was member of the 49th Military Police Brigade based in Fairfield. He was the 21st person from the California National Guard to die in Iraq and the first from his brigade, Gray said.
His family plans to speak publicly at a later date, and on Wednesday released the following statement through family friend Ebony Strain: "Mrs. Suzette Lawson, wife of Sgt. 1st Class Issac Shawn Lawson wishes to express her heartfelt gratitude for all the many prayers and expressions of condolences. Please keep the family in your prayers."
Strain said the family was notified Tuesday that Lawson, a graduate of Elk Grove High School, had been killed.
Lawson, a 12-year veteran of the National Guard, spent two weeks with his family in April, returning to complete his latest tour, Strain said. Lawson was scheduled to return home for good in September.
He planned to focus his energy on his wife and children, Strain said.
Local funeral arrangements are pending, and Gray said Lawson's colleagues in Iraq planned to commemorate his life on Friday. |
