Mail Tribune -- Marine Lance Cpl. Juan Manuel Garcia Schill, 20, of Grants Pass, died Monday during combat operations in Anbar province in Iraq, the Department of Defense announced Tuesday.

The Marine was killed by small arms fire, officials said.
He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based in Twentynine Palms, Calif. More details about Schill or his death were not immediately available.
His death brings to 3,584 the number of Americans in uniform who have died in Iraq since the war started in March 2003, according to The Associated Press. That number includes 59 from Oregon.
His death marks the second person from Jackson or Josephine counties to die in Iraq. Former Ashland resident Jacob M. Simpson, 24, died in May 2005 in Tal Afar, Iraq, the victim of a rocket-propelled grenade.
Sergeant Simpson was assigned to the Army's 2nd Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment from Fort Carson, Colo. He was a gunner on a Bradley fighting vehicle.
