Houston Chronicle -- A Houston soldier died early Thursday in northeast Iraq when a man wearing an explosives vest blew himself up while U.S. soldiers were doing a security check at a city council meeting.

The Defense Department identified the soldier as 1st Lt. Jeremy E. Ray, 26. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron, 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment at Fort Hood.

Ray graduated from Jersey Village High School in 2000, and enrolled in Texas A&M University, where he was a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets. He graduated from A&M in 2006.

Ray was a member of the Corps' H-1 unit, a Navy-Marine Corps regiment, said Col. Jake Betty, chief of staff for the office of the commandant at Texas A&M. During his junior year, Ray transferred to the Army ROTC, he said.

Ray is the 14th Aggie to die in Iraq since the U.S. invasion on March 18, 2003, Betty said.

Ray was deployed to Iraq on Nov. 8 — his father's birthday, the elder Ray said. It was his son's first deployment.

"We received three e-mails from him while he was over there," said Randy Ray. "He was just saying that he really couldn't tell us where he was, but that they were somewhere in northern Iraq, setting up a forward operation base called 'Warhorse.' "

Ray said his son was leading a patrol into the town of Kanaan, a Shiite-dominated town east of Baqouba early Thursday, when the blast happened.

"They had just had a city council meeting and were celebrating the Islamic holiday (Eid al-Adha) when a suicide bomber walked into the crowd and ignited himself," he said.

The explosion killed 13 civilians and wounded several other U.S. soldiers, Ray said.

Jeremy Ray loved to play the guitar and was an avid outdoorsman, said his college roommate who often joined him fishing on Lake Somerville, southwest of College Station.

"He was a good guy," said 1st Lt. Charlie Huey, 26, who is stationed at Ft. Hood with the field artillery unit. "He played his guitar a lot. He was kind of a quiet guy, the type of guy you'd want to hang out with."

But Ray was no pushover, Huey recalled. While in the Cadet Corps at Texas A&M, some freshmen left a dead rat on the front door of the house where Ray and Huey were staying.

"He (Ray) found out who did it and we went over to the Corps' room at the dorm," Huey said. "We went inside and had a 'discussion' with them. After that, we never had a problem with them again."

Randy Ray said the news of his son's death is still sinking in.

"I don't have any feeling. I'm just very numb," he said. "I have a lot of inner feelings penned up about the war."

Ray said his wife, Deborah, is "not holding up real good," but that a constant stream of well-wishers at their northwest Houston home has helped.

"The phone's been ringing off the hook, and close family members are here with us," he said. "Without that family support we'd be lost."

Our sincere gratitude and sympathy go out to each of the families of lost troops. Your child gave the ultimate sacrifice. We support our troops and their families and offer any help possible. Your loss is our loss and America's loss. They are all our Heroes! May God hold them all in his hands now. May your family somehow find peace and be proud of your sons bravery.

I am so sorry you lost your son in this awful war. I have a grandson in Iraq due to end his tour in March. God willing he will come home safe and whole. Having lost my only son I know how you're feeling. Nothing can take the pain away. Just know we think your son was a hero to all of us. I pray for you and yours and you have my deepest sympathy.
