NY Daily News -- The remains of Army National Guard Sgt. Manny Hornedo of Brooklyn, who was killed in Iraq, were expected to arrive in New York today, his grieving family said.
"It is very hard," Maria Nieves, Hornedo's mother-in-law, said. "The waiting, all the details, all the stuff that we have to do."
Hornedo, 27, a married father of two boys, was killed Tuesday when a suicide car bomber attacked his Humvee near Tikrit.
Visiting is scheduled at the Schaefer Funeral Home, 4123 Fourth Ave., Brooklyn, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday. A funeral Mass will be said at St. Michael's Church on Thursday at a time to be determined.
Workers at the Gap store in Herald Square, where Hornedo had been the security manager, set up savings accounts for the fallen soldier's two sons - Manny Jr., 6, and Marcus, 4.
Donations for the children can be made out to either boy and sent to: Washington Mutual, c/o Manny Hornedo Jr. or Marcus Antonio Hornedo, 5323 Fifth Ave., Brooklyn, N.Y. 11220.
"He was loved by everyone," said Betsaira Alvararez, a loss prevention agent who worked under Hornedo.
"He would always give his helping hand to everyone."
I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for our Country. I also wish to extend my deepest sympathy to your family.
