Martin Hjort

Individuals DenmarkA danish soldier died thursday evening in the Coalition camp in Al Haditha said the Army Operative Command. His parents and family have been notified. He is the sixth Danish soldier to die in Iraq.

The Danish Battalion were thursday evening contributing to an operation, when the camp was struck by missiles and mortars. Martin Hjort, 20, was gravely injured. {Ed note:  Joergen Christian Nyholm (company commander) corrects this by saying Martin Hjorth was killed in action and not by indirect fire.] The soldier was evacuated by helicopter to the British field hospital where he died from his injuries.

According to the family Martin asked to go to Iraq, however, his views had changed after arriving in the country. He constantly wrote to his family, who reside in Sjaelland. He had considered asking for a previous deployment to Iraq. Once in country there was no convenient or harmless task. He felt , that he could do a many jobs, so readily vollunteered to do most things.

The fallen soldier was frequently contacted by his parents and one of his sisters. According to the family, Martin was an affectionate human being. They had been able to keep in contact via e-mails and SMS over the phone.

Those that knew Martin have said he had too much energy for the cosiness of the soldiers compound in Iraq. During Movies at the Camp cinema he was made to stand at the back as he could not sit still for too long.

The Danish Battalion were thursday evening conducting search operations to locate the insurgents who fired the missiles and mortars against the Danish and British camp. Two other Danish soldiers were wounded in the attack and were treated at Camp Dannevang. They were not evacuated to the British Field Hospital.

I just want to make it clear that Martin Hjort lost his life during combat and not by a mortar attack.

Dad from a Dad, I am not pro or con to any war! My only concern is the soldier. Soldier serve his or her COUNTRY. The political leaders decide where our soldiers get deployed. I can not control that nor you. I wish we could. All I can do is be very supportive to my son and others. I have mailed endlessly amounts of pacakages to American, El Salvadorian, and British soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. An I do all I can to be supportive to any wounded soldier and fallen family. I understand you heart ache trust me I do.

Martin Hjort growe up in Zealand.

Before joining the army, he was a member of a union of scouts, called The blue scouts. He got through the ranks in The blue scouts, from Junior and then scout then senior and at last, before joining the danish army, juniorassistant.

He choosed to join The Jutland dragoons regiment, where he was for four months, after four months, he joined the eight months long reaction force training.

He volontered for his mission to Iraq, because he meant that he could make a difference. He's parents asked if he could just not be home, but he meant that, if did that it would be the same as ignore the people in Iraq that needed help. He also knowed that there were a risk of been killed or wounded.

When he came to Iraq, he was proud to be in the danish battalion.
He distinguished himself as a driver for his team, that he was very competent and carried for his friends and colleagues. He was popular and well-likened among both the british and danish soldiers in Camp Danevang.
One time, he established a cinema, in the camp, so he's comerades did'nt get boored.
Because of his distinguished efforts as a soldier, he received a commendation as "Soldier of the month" in his unit.
On october the 5th 2006, he's unit was a part of a column that consisted of british and danish soldiers. The column was struck by an IED, but there were no casuelties.
The column asked after a team of enginiors, that could search the place after more IED's.
After sometime the column was attacked by rebels, that attacked with rifles and RPGs. The column returned fire to defend its position. After some times an RPG shell exploded beside Martin, and he was injured. He was evacuated to the british field hospital, by an helicopter, but he was declared death when the chopper came to the hospital.

Martin was buried with a military funeral, and he received both The medal for those killed or wounded in service, and The danish defences medal.

After his comerades returned after six months in Iraq. The Jutland dragoon regiment, writed his name into a memorial plate into stone, so the memories of him and other dragoons, that has lost their life in international service, remains forever.

According to some eyewitness reports, Martin Hjort defended his position bravely with his comerades. But it is unknown if he's is gonna receive another commendation from the military.

As i am sure a number of members have pointed out, Martin was killed as a result of enemy small arms and rpg fire in the northern edge of basra city!
He survived for some time but was in the open and his friends were unable to pull him out of enemy fire for some and bravely took there chances to pull him out of harms way. This is a sad lose to the world of yet another guardian angel who enters hell to protect others.

Sadly i was there to witness this episode and my very sincere condolences to his family and friends, his death was not in vien.
