Overkonstable Dennis Ove Hansens, 23, was killed in a vehicle accident on Tuesday June 6, 2006. The accident occurred at approximately 9.00 local time at Shaiba Logistic Base. The Danish contingent is stationed at Camp Danevang, which is near by. The soldiers were practicing tactical haulage and transportation movement by convoy when a Mercedes GD lost control. There were no other soldiers injured during the incident.

Dennis had worked with the Logistics Company as well as the Battalion staff. He is the fourth Danish soldier to lose his life while serving in Iraq. An investigation into the accident has begun, with a team from the Danish military traveling to the scene.

The Danish contingent held a service for their fallen comrade. As his casket was moved from the chapel at the base hospital his fellow soldiers stood shoulder to shoulder as the sun went down over the camp. After a few words from the camp chaplain they held a minutes silence. From there he was placed onto a military aircraft for the final journey home to his family.

Commander of the Danish contingent, Colonel Henrik Bergamot, has sent condolences and wishes to the family. He also stated that Dennis was a very good friend and well regarded soldier.

Dennis was returned to his hometown on Friday where the Signals Regiment held another service. Among those attending were the chief of the Army Operations Command, Major General Poul KiƦrskou, and the commander of the Signals Regiment, Colonel Ib Johannes Baker. Denmark currently has more than 500 soldiers stationed in Iraq.
