City News -- The nephew of former FDNY Chief of Department Peter Hayden has been killed battling insurgents with his Marine unit in Iraq, his mother confirmed yesterday.

Queens-born Michael Glover, 28, was mortally injured in a firefight Wednesday outside the insurgent hotbed of Fallujah, 35 miles west of Baghdad.

"I'm very proud of him," Glover's mom, Margaret, said. "He wanted to do this, to go over there, for himself and for the country." Hayden, who retired from the Fire Department in June, was traveling and couldn't be reached for comment.

Margaret Glover said her son died on his first tour of duty in Iraq, which was to end Oct. 28.

"I didn't allow myself to focus on anything else but the fact that my son would be home for Thanksgiving and we'll have dinner with the big family," she said wistfully.

Glover was born and raised in Far Rockaway, where he attended Xavier High School.

The heartbroken mother said Glover worked summers as a lifeguard, played the guitar and "always found a way to make people laugh." His mom said he graduated with honors from Albany State University and interrupted his law studies at Pace University to join the Marines. "He said he had thought about joining all along because it was something he wanted to do . . . to fight for his country. He was ready to go," she said.

A cousin, Rita Martin, shook her head and said sadly, "He just had more friends than anyone can count."

Funeral arrangements were incomplete last night.

Mike,
You lived life in a way that we wished we could. You searched for meaning and never settled. You were not afraid of channge, nor were you afraid to take chances. You were able to see the better part of people, bringing out a side to some that they never knew was there. I will remember you through out my life time, and how much purpose you had for such a young man. You are an inspiration. In my mind and heart you will live on forever. You lived your life with conviction and took it all in stride, and to that we celebrate your life. You've managed to touch the souls of all the paths you crossed, and for that you are a special friend that will live on close to the many troubled hearts in this difficult time.

You now have your wings, love is running through the vains of all those you have touched, and as we remember you, I know you will be watching over all of us. You are a hero to us all, youve touched the hearts of many and will never be forgotten.

With much love,
Katie

Our 2nd anniversary to our son death is tomorrow, all I can say is this....This will be with you forever, it will make you cry everyday, and you will always cause you great sadness when people ask you how were your holiday? Life goes on for them. They do not every realize that your loss will burn in your heart and mind forever.
You will miss him everyday, but stand tall. What he believed in and the price he paid for living it needs you to remember. Be proud no matter how sad you may be. Your son is a fine man. He now belongs to the elite group of all those who give all for others. Share him with someone everyday to keep his bright spirit alive. Then he will always be remembered by those who may not even have met him. His life is worth it. Do not let others take that away from him, or your family.
