News-JournalOnline -- DELAND -- Overcome with emotion, Richard Gilbert sobbed Thursday as he prepared to leave for Ohio to bury his son, a U.S. Marine killed in this week's helicopter crash in Iraq.

At 3:20 p.m. Wednesday, the DeLand resident got the news that son Cpl. Richard Gilbert Jr., 26, was one of the Marines who died that morning when a CH-53E Super Stallion helicopter crashed in a desert sandstorm near the town of Rutba, Iraq. Thirty others -- Marines and a Navy officer -- also perished in the crash.

"He was to come out of Iraq Feb. 8," Gilbert Sr., 55, said as he made preparations to go to Dayton, Ohio. "He was to come see me, but he never made it."

His son lived in Dayton and family members were going there to await his casket, he said.

"We have not been told if they recovered his body, but they told us they found his dog tags," the father said.

Richard Gilbert Jr. worked at Chrysler in Dayton and purchased his home at age 21. He joined the Marines Sept. 11, 2001, and was stationed at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina before he shipped out to Iraq.

"I was very afraid for his life," said Richard Gilbert Sr., who last saw his son in June in Dayton.

Asked if he believes his son died for a good cause, Gilbert Sr., said "it is a tough one to answer."

"I think Richard himself thought it was a good cause."

This comment is coming from Rae Oldaugh, the mother of Lcpl Allan Klein who was with Lcpl Gilbert in the helicopter crash that killed so many men of Charlie Company. I would like folks to know that Lcpl Gilbert was my son's best friend in the Marines. My husband and I once had the pleasure of having breakfast with Richard when we were at Metro Airport to pick up my son, Allan. I'm glad to say we did a small thing like giving him breakfast before he finished his journey home to Dayton. God bless him.

My family thanks everyone for the support and condolences during this hard time. Richard is my cousin and he was a great guy and an awesome Marine. He will be missed but he is home. Thanks again for everything. Richard fought for what was right ... his country! And to everyone else that lost a family member during this war, OUR thoughts and prayers are with you as well.

Richard was a great friend i should say but to me he was a big brother looking down and trying to make the best he was a hard working man and had many goals to fill he made most of his goals but as i speak for him and everyone he was close too he had the biggest heart and wouldn't back down i miss him he kept thing in shape back home if you had a problem he could find a way to take care of that but he was a true american and god bless him and the other troops he was with on that day....
