Roman Genzersky committed suicide when he shot himself in the head with a machine-gun at the base used by Ukrainian forces in Al-Kut airport on Friday July 2, 2004.

Genzersky did assignments inside the base of the Ukrainian forces, and did not patrol or guard important objects. He had previously submitted a letter to his superiors that he wanted to stay in Iraq for a second term with the Ukrainian unit, which is to replace the current peacekeepers in Iraq.

Roman thank you for serving Ukraine and along side our American soldiers. You have given the iraqi people HOPE! To one day live in peace. Your life was not given in VAIN! You are a HERO, to your countrymen, women, Americans and Iraq! Thank You for your military brotherhood to our son and every soldier serving in Iraqi. i'm sadden you took that route..but you are a hero and always will be in our hearts.. much respect to you and your family.. you'll be missed and loved.. thanks for your courage for fighting out there.. r.i.p. your with god now!
