www.borderlandnews.com -- Sgt. Israel Devora of Clint was killed April 1 in Baghdad, Iraq, when he was hit by an improvised explosive device while on foot patrol, the Pentagon said Wednesday.
Devora, 22, was a member of the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, which is now based in Baumholder, Germany.

The explosion also killed another soldier in the unit, Staff Sgt. Darrell P. Clay, 34, of Fayetteville, N.C.
Spc. Michael Cuellar, now stationed at Fort Bliss, served with Devora in Germany when they were in the 1-4 Infantry Regiment.
"He was very competent -- quiet, but a very collected guy," Cuellar said, emotion clouding his voice. "He was very dedicated. He was all Army. You could see it in his eyes."
Devora graduated in 2001 from Clint High School, where he was a member of the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps.
His family declined to comment Wednesday.
Family friends have described the soldier as a respectful, energetic boy who grew into a responsible young man who took his commitments seriously.
Devora was on his second tour of Iraq when he was killed.
"He's an individual who made the ultimate sacrifice for his country," said Frank Durant, a Clint teacher and coach who knew the soldier. "This reflects what this country is all about." |
