KHNL -- WASHINGTON, D.C. (KHNL) - A Hawaii born soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom has died.

The Department of Defense says 19-year-old Private Eugene Kanakaole of Maui died June 11 in Balad Iraq, of injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident.

He was assigned to the 87th Engineer Company, 8th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas.

The incident is under investigation.

It's sad, Eugene didn't have a lot of family. I pray for him. He was a good person that had good intentions and the wrong guidance, but Eugene did his best for himself and his country. God bless him.
