Brian Dunlap

Individuals USNBCSanDiego -- Sgt. Brian Dunlap, of Vista, was one of three local servicemen killed this week in Iraq, according to the military. Army Sgt. Paul Neubauer, of Oceanside and National Guard Specialist Mike Sonoda, of Fallbrook were also killed.

Before he went on tour in Iraq, Dunlap served as a fireman at Camp Pendleton. He friends describe him as "funny, caring and brash."

Christina Raines clearly remembers the last time she saw Dunlap in April, before he left for Iraq.

"That's when I gave him a huge hug, and he said, 'You haven't seen the last of me.'"

According to a friend, Dunlap was training Iraqi soldiers. She said she got a call from him about a week ago. He told her he had lost two of his men.

"He was very upset about that," said Wendy Bakker. "You could hear it in his voice; he was sort of scared."

Bakker shared an email in which Dunlap said, "I almost got whacked again this morning. That makes five times in the last two weeks."

Dunlap went on to say he lost 11 men in his company to injury. He called Iraq the "wild west."

Friends said Dunlap thought he was fighting for a good cause.

I had the pleaure of meeting Birian Dunlap about a year ago when he took my step daughter out for a date. At the time the young man was a firefighter. He spoke affectionately of the Marine Core, how great it is and how their philosophy was to draw out the enemy, engage them and then kill them.

We learned of his death this week.

I want to say that Brian was/is a great American. What made him great? He beleived in freedom and was willing to go fight for his country. In a time when everyone does nothing but complain, Brian didn't. But isn't that the way it always is with those who guarantee our freedom, with their blood? He was in IRAQ yesterday, defending us so that tomorrow they arn't here killing us.

May the Lord Bless and Keep you, May the Lord let his light fall upon you, Now and for all eternity. Semper Fi Brian/Marine ---- good job! We will all miss you and never forget what you did for us.

It was a plearue for me to meet this young American Hero.

Sincerely,

Stu

Today, we came together in your home town of Carmichael to say good-bye. A very sad day for us as we looked at only a large photo of you in your blues which you were so proud to wear. I remember a young kid of 17 who grew up to become a man that we all were proud and honored to know. As the military gun shots seared through the air, each bone in my body shook, and it was then that I realized beneath my tears, that you died doing what your mission in life was..looking out for other people. I can only hope that you are no longer in pain, and are looking down upon us now..looking out for other people as always. I said today, and I will say it again. "Leave it to Brian to bring us all together after all of these years", the only thing missing was the black Metallica t-shirts. We all love you "little Brian", and you are missed.
