20 October, the vice-chairman of the Danang People’s Committee Van Huu
Chien met with the senior officers of USS Mustin destroyer led by Cdr.
James T. Jones on their five-day visit to the city. Representatives of
the High Command of Navy of Zone No. 3 also participated. Vice-chairman
Chien gave the delegation a warm welcome, saying he considered this a
meaningful visit which will contribute to promoting the cooperation and
friendship between the U.S. and Vietnam, including Danang and the two naval forces. He briefed on recent cooperation between Danang and the U.S. localities in commerce, investment, culture, health and education.

Vice-chairman Chien
gave the delegation a warm welcome, saying he considered this a
meaningful visit which will contribute to promoting the cooperation and
friendship between the U.S. and Vietnam, including Danang and the two naval forces. He briefed on recent cooperation between Danang and the U.S. localities in commerce, investment, culture, health and education.
The city has exchanged many cooperative delegations with cities and states in the U.S. such as Oakland, Pittsburgh, San Francisco and California. There are 05 enterprises invested by the U.S. in Danang and about 35 city enterprises cooperate with U.S. partners. Import-export turnover between Danang and the U.S. was US$150 million last year. Recently, the U.S. government disbursed funding of US$3 million to help overcoming the impact of toxic chemicals at the Danang International Airport and assist the disabled of the city. Especially in education and training, the University of Danang has cooperated with U.S. universities such as Pittburgh and Chicago in training and exchange of professional skills. The Fund of the U.S. Embassy in Vietnam has also provided US$24,000 for restoration work at the Museum of Cham Sculpture in Danang.

James expressed his gratitude for the warm affection given to the USS
Mustin by the city. He said that the crew was especially impressed by
the meetings with Nguyen Dinh Chieu High School for Disabled Children, the University of Danang and the naval forces of Zone No. 3. |
