Individuals USNews Observer -- A young Marine from Camp Lejeune was killed in Iraq on Saturday while helping root out insurgents from the town of Karabilah along the Iraqi-Syrian border.

Lance Cpl. Adam J. Crumpler, 19, was killed by small-arms fire during Operation Spear, the Department of Defense said Monday.

Crumpler, of Charleston, W.Va., was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force at Camp Lejeune. He joined the unit in July after signing up for the Marines in December 2003, said Lt. Barry Edwards, a spokesman at Camp Lejeune.

Crumpler was remembered as a cutup, a teenager who liked to clown around.



His older sister, Brittnay Crumpler, 21, spent part of Monday afternoon flipping through old photos, laughing at one of Adam at 15 preening in one of her dresses.

"I'm not sure what I'm going to do now," she said. "I took care of him."

Their mother died when Adam was 13; their father isn't around anymore.

Emma Johnson, Crumpler's maternal grandmother, helped raise the children.

As a junior, Adam Crumpler skipped class so often that his grandmother started going to school with him. For nine weeks, she followed him from class to class and sat between him and the door.

He wrote home from Iraq often. His last letter to his sister arrived a few days ago. "I only have to survive a few more major missions," he wrote.

Johnson said he called her shortly before he left for his last mission. "He said, 'Grandma, I just wanted to hear your voice and tell you I love you, and I'll call you when I get back.' "

This is a very sad story. We need a picture of Adam J. Crumpler. I will keep checking his hometown newspaper. God bless his sister and grandmother.

I will be emailing this story to most of the people on my email address book. Some of them don't like to be reminded but there is a war going on and we are losing too many of America's finest. What a wonderful boy, Adam. May God's angels surround his family with love and bring some comfort.

I went to school with Adam since 2nd grade. We was so funny and made everyone laugh so much. The community here is somber. Everyone knew Adam and he is the first solider that I have personally knew that has died in Iraq. Please pray for his family, they need it.

I am Adam's Aunt. His mother was my sister. It is hard to believe our beautiful boy is gone. He was a proud and dedicated Marine. He believed in what he was doing. We are so very proud to have such a courageous young man in our family. He will be in our thoughts and our hearts forever. Yes, he did like to cutup and make everyone laugh. It didn't matter how mad I was at him, he would say or do something to make me laugh and forget everything. He was loyal to his family. He endured a lot in his short life but he loved and was loved to the fullest extent possible. Thank you to those who have put your kind words on here for Adam. They are greatly appreciated. GOD bless all of you.

I went to high school with Adam all four years. We became really good friends, after graduation though, I didn't see the friends I had made in high school anymore. I am sorry to hear this and to hear it happened to such a wonderful young man. I am military wife, to a soldier overseas. I know the hurt you feel and the sadness, I couldn't imagine how you feel right now, but I do know Adam was special in everyway, he touched the lives of soo many people. If you was having a bad day, he was right there to pick you up. God bless Adams family, everyone is in my thoughts and prayers.

Adam was a good friend of my son David Johnston. When I met Adam I knew he was a great kid. I am a former soldier and am honored to have known Adam. He is a great Patriot and an even greater Hero. Rest in Peace Adam. You will always be remembered. (Julie Peter, NC)

To the Crumpler family: May the thoughts and prayers of others bring you comfort and strength on the difficult road that you will travel. We lost our dear nephew, also a Marine, on November 11, 2004. It is so very hard to lose someone so young and so dedicated. Please know that you are not alone. But there is no comfort, only the sense of loss for what Adam may have been and who he may have become. Thank you, Adam, for your sacrafice so that we may enjoy the freedoms that we do. You were brave and you will be in the hearts of many forever. To his family, Godspeed.

my name is kendell hopkins I was in adams platoon in boot camp. I didnt really get to know him personally but he had the drive in him to succeed he was a very likeable guy. coop told me alot of stories about him the most rememberable was when adam went home during one holiday he got out of coops truck and humped like 8 miles home, coop said "that mother f---er is tough", "I loved that guy" he would also say alot. he was to young to die for bushs war. we will remember you always and dedicate every drink to you. we love u adam see you again someday!!!
