David N. Crombie

Individuals USwww.news.rgj.com -- A 19-year-old Winnemucca soldier was killed Wednesday in Iraq when an improvised explosive device detonated near his Humvee during combat operations, officials said Thursday.

Army Pfc. David N. Crombie, a 2004 graduate of Cibola High School in Yuma, Ariz., was a combat medic in the 2nd Battalion, 6th Infantry Regiment, based in Baumholder, Germany.

Family members, notified Thursday, said Crombie had been deployed to Kuwait for about a month and was part of a convoy when he was killed.

Also killed in the explosion in Ar Ramadi was 1st Lt. Scott M. Love, 32, of Knoxville, Tenn.

Crombie's stepfather, Dennis Laybourn, and mother Jennifer Laybourn, both of Winnemucca, said Crombie always wanted to join the military.

"He went for a short time to college at Northern Arizona University, but then he joined the Army after that," Dennis Laybourn said.

"It was just something he wanted to do. He always wanted to join the Army."

He left June 15, 2005, for basic training.

Crombie, a drummer, studied music for one semester at NAU, played the snare drum in his high school marching band and formed several garage bands with friends during his teens.

"I don't know if he really knew what he wanted to do once this Army thing was over," said Dennis Laybourn, who fought back tears as he talked.

An avid hunter since childhood, the soldier sent weekly letters to his mother and stepfather and communicated through e-mail.

Laybourn said Crombie moved to Winnemucca after graduating from high school and lived there for about six months.

The family is planning a memorial service in Yuma. The stepfather said Crombie will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery.

Crombie is also survived by brothers Dan Crombie, 23, of Tucson, Ariz., and Jason Laybourn, 13, of Winnemucca.

He is the 34th Nevadan and the first from Winnemucca killed in the war on terrorism.

You always managed to make the best of any situation. And you always managed to make those around you laugh, smile and have a good time. I didn't know you for long and the time we spent at Ft. Sam will never be forgotten. I'd like to give my deepest sympathies to your family and friends. I know you'll be there watching over all of us that have to go to the sandbox soon. You'll always be in my thoughts and prayers. To a friend, a fellow soldier, and a hero.... You will always be missed.

Nick, you gave all and I thank you for that. I won't forget the fried chicken or the order of pizza that took forever. We had a great time at AIT and I'm glad to have known you. That coin from the Army game will never be the same to me.
RIP

It's hard to imagine someone that you just left a short time ago is already gone and each day doesn't make it better, or him come back. I went to AIT with Crombie and he always made you laugh and being in platoons right beside each other, i saw Crombie everyday. In fact, I saw Crombie grad nite on the riverwalk...about 10pm and he's still in his class a's getting ready to have dinner with his family. he was all smiles still and that's how he'll always be remembered. We'll all see you again one day Crombie, but for now, watch over us and keep us all safe. RIP.

It has been a privilege serving with PV2 Crombie. I will always remember that smile in his face when he told me that morning that he had treated an wounded Iraqi civilian. PV2 Crombie, you will always be one of my best medic that I have ever served with in my military career.

We miss you,

Crombie-tube.. hahaha.. He never eally liked that nickname.. He had some silly names for me.. me being Native AMerican and all.. We joked and had tons of laughs.. When he did his stupid robot and held that character for quite a while because it made me ball up laughing.. He was an awesome fren.. trully a one of a kind of guy.. Roca and I trully believed he had the potential to make it.. We'd always tell Crombie that he gets away with everything.. The playing around and the "Tom-Follery".. His reply was I can turn it on like a switch.. I can be out of my mind [throwing his arms around].. and then I can get serious.. We would be the most well put together individual.. Someone I see with a square shoulder and a level head. Crombie.. I wish we could have had more chats and pointless arguments.. it was awesome.. Too a Great Soldier [tusker] Medic.. a Great soldier.. a fren.. a brother.. a son.. God rest in peace.. Crombie [tube]
