Davide Casagrande died on Thursday July 14, 2005, as the result of a non-hostile vehicle accident. Two other Italian soldiers were injured in the accident.

Casagrande, alpine Petty officer first class of the fourth Regiment parachutists of Bolzano, was taking part in one of the normal activities in the region, along with 5 others of the regiment. While they covered a road in the south-east of Nasiriyah their motor vehicle exited a road and rolled over.

First caporal greater Valentino Michielotto, of Padova, and first caporal greater Paul Chiarillo, of the province of Lecce were injured. They were recovering in a military hospital but were expected to be flown home with hours.

The incident happened nearly a year after a similar incident on 5 July 2004, which cost the life of caporal greater Antonio Tarantino. Also in that case it was a street incident.

With Casagrande there are 26 Italian soldiers who have died from the beginning of the mission, in 2003, and 7 civilians. Of the 26 Italian fatalities in Iraq, seventeen of them lost their lives in a November 2003 suicide truck bomb attack on an Italian base in Nasiriyah.
