www.wzzm13.com-- Freeport - 20 year old Dane Carver had six months left in his tour of duty in Iraq. His father says he wanted to come home to Freeport, marry his fiancé and take classes in auto mechanics.
He was killed by a sniper's bullet the day after Christmas.

"That's my boy," says Don Carver surrounded by photographs showing his son Dane performing various military duties. Don Carver says he knew his boy was facing danger and possible death, "My wife and I were talking about, you know, if your children go to war you're going to have to come to place where you know something could happen."
On the day after Christmas, the pentagon says 20 year old Army Specialist Fourth Class Dane Carver was on patrol in Iraq when he was shot and killed by enemy fire.
Don Carver had emailed with his son shortly before he was killed, "He had e-mailed me Christmas day said I can't wait to get back going to get some chow and he said we have to go make this patrol... They said that one it was a sniper bullet that hit him in the neck."
Dane Carver was a graduate of Thornapple-Kellogg High School. He went in the Army National Guard with several friends from his graduating class. During a visit home in October he told his dad he believed in his mission. "He said we feel good about it when we are over there and we see all the good things that are happening. He said we know we are doing the right thing."
Don Carver shared a personal conversation he had with his son, "He told me I want you to be proud of me and I am. He died honorably he died serving his country he died so other people could be free."
Funeral arrangements are still pending. |
