It is with deep regret that the Ministry of Defence can confirm the death of Major Stephen Alexis Ballard. He died of natural causes on 30 March.

His family have issued the following statement:

"Stephen joined the Royal Marines in 1994 and was promoted to the rank of Major in 2001. He was passionate about his life in the Royal Marines and proud to be a marine.

"One of four sons, he loved his family. Stephen and Lucy had been married for 18 months and were thrilled at the prospect of the arrival of their first child later this year.

"Stephen's family, colleagues and wide circle of friends are devastated by his death which leaves a great void."

To the Ballard family from the Wahl family of America. Stephen thank you for serving your country and for being a colation force along side of America and your brotherhood to our son. Unfortunately, Gregory and you are togteher now. Not the way either of you would of like dthe meeting of one another; nor our families. No easy way dealing with your lost Stephen. So i suggest one day at a time. Always be supportive toward one another. As we all deal with our lost very differently. Reflect on fond memories of stephen. After all he is in our hearts very much so! He loved you all dearly. An he knew you all loved him very much. i just want Stephen and your family......to understand your not alone. I lost my son US Army Sgt. Gregory L.Wahl KIA Balad, Iraq 05-03-04. i shed many tears since; today shed tears for your STEPHEN

Maj. Ballard,
Sir, I would like to say thank you for your service and sacrifice for Great Britain. And to your family and loved ones, I wish to extend my deepest sympathy. The United States is lucky to have an ally such as your Country in our time of need.

A grateful American
